The HELP screen may be a useful reminder of the features that are available to you.For help, type '?'

To find books, or audiovisuals, use functions 1 - 4.

For best results use KEYWORDS (Function 1) first.

Searching by KEYWORD

A) KEYWORD uses any combination of: author, title, series, subject, year, location. Enter terms separated by spaces.

B) In keyword searching, the entire record is searched, so typing "White" will retrieve "White" as an author, word in title, word in series, and or word in a subject heading

C) To truncate a term, type that term with a "+" sign: "NEOPL+" will retrieve neoplasm, neoplasia, neoplastic as an author, word in title, word in series, and subject.

D) Combine author, title or subject with publication date exact year; 1992 range of exact years; 1991 - 1992 years prior to date; -1990 years after date; 1990-

E) Terms can be searched in any order: DEVITA ONCOLOGY will retrieve Cancer: Principles of Oncology by William Devita

F) Ignores: capitalization, punctuation, final "s", "and", "a", "an", "the"

In the public catalog, books are displayed in two ways: 1. Brief Display 2. Full Display

Example: In order to find titles on liver disease and alcohol type in LIVER DISEASEALCOHOL+ at the KEYWORD prompt.

As soon as the system has something to show you, up to 5 items will appear on the screen. This initial display is called the "abbreviated or brief display" and looks like this:

BRIEF DISPLAY

Books: 1 - ? of 194 or less Keyword: LIVER DISEASE ALCOHOL+

1) Hall, Pauline.

Alcoholic liver disease: [1985]

2) Bonkowsky, Herbert L

Alcohol and the liver [1981]

3) Khanna, J.M.

Alcoholic liver pathology / [1973]

-For full display and printing enter number(s) (e.g. 1,3) or A for All.

-Other options: B to go back; ? for Help; RETURN to continue; ESC to start full display

The number of records ULHIN is searching appears near the top of the screen. This is not necessarily how many books the library owns on the subject, it is only a rough indication of the maximum number of records ULHIN must search to find the information you are looking for. In this abbreviated display, only the author/editor, brief title, and call number are given for each book so that you can quickly scan up to five records on each screen.

At the bottom of the screen there will be some directions on what to do next. If you see a title in the brief display that looks promising, typing the number that appears to the left of that title will tell ULHIN to remember that title and show you the full display after you have finished reviewing your set. If you don't see anything that you are interested in on the first screen, hit the RETURN key to get the next set of five.

Records are displayed in reverse chronological order (most recently published first). Journals or series ("open entries") will come before monographs or books. After you have reviewed the entire set in the brief display format (or have seen everything you want to see), hitting the ESC key will tell ULHIN to start showing you the card catalog or "full display" for each of the titles you have just saved. The "full display" which resembles the traditional catalog card looks like this:

MEDICAL SUBJECT HEADINGS

The Medical Subject Headings are the preferred terms used in the ULHIN system. The MeSH subfile enables the user to locate online the appropriate headings for their specific topic.

This special file shows the user the details about the Medical Subject Headings. The display may provide a definition, related subject headings a or broader terms.

The Medical Subject headings are arranged in a hierarchical or "outline" form, with the narrower terms indented. This arrangement allows the user to broaden or narrow their search topic by offering additional terms.

To search this file the user inputs a single word at the term prompt.

ULHIN will list all of the Medical Subject headings containing the term. (A shortened list is provided for the example below).

Term: DIABETES

1. Diabete = Diabetes Mellitus

2. Diabete, Alloxan = Diabetes Mellitus, Experimental

3. DIABETES, BRONZE = Hemochromatosis
