The Violence Institute of New Jersey in partnership with the Office of Extended School Day Programs of the Newark Public Schools manages The Do The Write Thing Challenge, an initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence. This program gives Newark Middle School students not only the opportunity to communicate about the impact of violence on their lives, but also to suggest what could be done to stop violence in families, schools, and their community in their own personal writings. Each participant accepts the Challenge by making a personal commitment not to engage in violence.

Each year, two (2) finalists (a male and female) are chosen. They are honored at a national recognition ceremony in Washington, DC and their essays are published and placed in the Library of Congress.
