J-1 Students

Welcome to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). If you choose to enter the U.S. under the J-1 student category, you must meet one of the following requirements:

1. If you or your program are financed directly or indirectly by the U.S. Government, your home government, or an international organization of which the United States is a member by treaty or statue;
2. The exchange program is carried out pursuant to an agreement between the U.S. Government and a foreign government;
3. The exchange program is carried out pursuant to a written agreement between:

   • An American and foreign educational institution or,

   • An American educational institution and a foreign government or,
   • A U.S. state or local government and a foreign government;
4. The exchange visitor student is supported substantially by funding from any source other than personal or family funds.

If you are accepted in a degree granting program, you are required to register for a full course load each required semester. A full course load is typically a minimum of 9 credits for graduate students and 12 credits for undergraduate students.

Non-degree Students

If you are participating in the non-degree category, you are required to conduct research in the laboratory on a full-time basis. The non-degree category is used for foreign nationals that are students in their home country and will conduct research in the U.S. The total time allotted in this category is 24 months.
