Susan W. Salmond

Dr. Susan W. SalmondNationally recognized nurse leader, Susan Salmond, EdD, RN, CTN, was appointed interim dean at UMDNJ-School of Nursing in January 2007 after serving at the School as vice dean for academic affairs. Her distinguished record includes faculty and administrative posts at Kean University in Union, New Jersey and Teachers College-Columbia University in New York.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Villanova University, her Master of Science in Nursing from Seton Hall University and her Doctor of Education degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Certified in transcultural nursing and advanced nursing administration, Dr. Salmond has developed several graduate programs that combine these areas of expertise.

At UMDNJ, Dr. Salmond spearheaded development of a new Master of Science in Nursing program in Clinical Leadership and launched New Jersey’s first Doctor of Nursing Practice program—securing nearly $2 million in federal grants to support these programs. She is co-director of the New Jersey Center for Evidence-Based Practice at UMDNJ, which is one of only four United States affiliates of the international Joanna Briggs Institute.

Dr. Salmond is editor of Orthopaedic Nursing, the premier text in the field, research editor of the journal, Orthopaedic Nursing, and editor of the first three editions of the Core Curriculum for Orthopaedic Nursing. She has written extensively and presented internationally on topics such as orthopaedics, nursing care delivery, evidence-based practice, and nursing leadership. Her current study, “When the family member is a nurse: The role and needs of nurse family members during critical illness of a loved one,” is gaining widespread recognition among practitioners and scholars alike.

The recipient of the 2007 C.A.R.E. Award for Excellence in Education from the New Jersey State Nurses Association, Dr. Salmond has served as a consultant to numerous medical centers in New Jersey. She currently is a member of the Board of Directors of Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center and the Program Advisory Board for the New Jersey Area Health Education Centers (AHEC). A resident of Westfield, New Jersey, she is the proud mother of three daughters—one of whom has just become a nurse.
