Biography

Dr. Huey-Shys Chen’s research focuses on instrument development and psychometric validation. She has focused on community-based study, specifically on the primary prevention of high-risk behaviors. Two of Dr. Chen’s instruments, The Decisional Balance Scale (CDBS) and the Self-efficacy in resisting smoking scale (CSSES-20) have been requested by researchers from different countries to use in their studies. She has also, presented her research widely at research conferences and invited presentations. Her research has been published in some of the most prestigious nursing journals including: Research in Nursing and Health, Nursing Research, Journal of Health Education, and Journal of School Health. Dr. Chen is currently working as a co-investigator on a CDC funded (1.2 million) study: “HIV Testing Factors among Rural/Small City Black Men” and a NIH funded research "Salivary biomarkers for oral cancer in lichen planus patients" ($281,076.00).

Dr. Chen also serves the reviewer’s role for 2 top rank nursing journals: Research in Nursing and Health, and Journal of Nursing Scholarship. Across discipline, she is served as a Section Editor : Smoking, Alcohol and Other Drugs for the Californian Journal of Health Promotion and is also a review board member for International Electronic Journal of Health Education, and also a reviewer for abstract submitted for the section of School Health Education and Services and the section of Public Health Nursing of the American Public Health Association. Internationally, Dr. Chen is an editorial board member for the Chinese Journal of Medicine, published in Beijing, China.
