UMDNJ Organization

UMDNJ was created to consolidate and unify all of New Jersey's public
programs in medical and dental education. Founded in 1970 by an act of the
State Legislature as the College of Medicine and Dentistry, UMDNJ was
granted status as a free standing university in 1981, in recognition of its
growth and development as a statewide system for health. UMDNJ today
includes eight schools:
- UMDNJ-New
Jersey Medical School in Newark, with a total
enrollment of about 700, graduating around 170 M.D.'s each year.
- UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in
Piscataway/New
Brunswick, and
Camden,
with a total enrollment of about
640, graduating approximately 150 M.D.'s annually, and a total enrollment
of about 260 in the New Jersey Graduate Program in Public Health (NJGPPH).
- UMDNJ-School
of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford,
with an enrollment of 290, graduating about 50 D.O.'s annually.

UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School
in Newark with a total
enrollment of about 340, awarding approximately 80 doctor of dental
medicine (D.M.D.) degrees each year.
- UMDNJ-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in
Newark,
Piscataway,
and Stratford
which enrolls more than 300 students at its two campuses.
Graduate study for the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees is supervised by the faculty
of the New Jersey Medical School and the New Jersey Dental School in
Newark, and by the faculty of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and
Rutgers University in Piscataway.
- UMDNJ-School
of Health Related Professions in Newark,
which has more than 850 students enrolled in certificate and joint-degree
programs in 15 specialties.
- UMDNJ-School of Nursing
in Newark, which enrolls more
than 550 students in degree and joint degree programs.
- UMDNJ-School of Public Health
UMDNJ also participates in New Jersey's health care system, and maintains
affiliations with some 80 hospitals throughout the State.
UMDNJ also recognizes the need for improved mental health and operates two
mental health facilities:
UMDNJ-University Behavioral HealthCare at
Piscataway, and UMDNJ-University Behavioral HealthCare at
Newark. These centers provide inpatient as well as extensive
outpatient services.
