Official seal of the University

The great seal of the University.
The translation of the inscription is "I learn to relieve suffering".

UMDNJ was created to consolidate and unify all of New Jersey's public programs in medical and dental education. Founded in 1970 by an act of the State Legislature as the College of Medicine and Dentistry, UMDNJ was granted status as a free standing university in 1981, in recognition of its growth and development as a statewide system for health. UMDNJ today includes eight schools: UMDNJ also participates in New Jersey's health care system, and maintains affiliations with some 80 hospitals throughout the State.

UMDNJ also recognizes the need for improved mental health and operates two mental health facilities: UMDNJ-University Behavioral HealthCare at Piscataway, and UMDNJ-University Behavioral HealthCare at Newark. These centers provide inpatient as well as extensive outpatient services.
