attack: Responding to
Potential Chemical
Warfare
THE NIH awarded
researchers at RWJMS and
Rutgers a five-year, $23
million grant to continue
research developing drugs
to be used against
chemical warfare agents
from a terrorist attack. The
CounterACT Research
Center of Excellence was
launched with a $19.2
million NIH grant in 2006
to focus on developing
drugs to treat individuals
exposed to mustard gas,
which can cause a host of
severe symptoms and
permanent damage. The
Center’s director is Jeffrey
Laskin, PhD, professor of
environmental and
occupational medicine at
RWJMS.
