CALL for VOLUNTEERS Type I (Juvenile Onset) Diabetes Mellitus and Renal Failure The Department of Medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick is conducting a four-week study for patients, age 18 and older, with Type I diabetes mellitus and renal failure. Diabetes Mellitus with Kidney Complications Diabetes specialists at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick are conducting a study of a new investigational drug to slow down the progression of kidney complications. To be eligible, participants must have Type I (age 18 to 65) or Type II (age 30 to 70) diabetes and have protein in the urine. Monetary compensation is available to those who complete the study. Diabetes The Department of Medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick is looking for volunteers between the ages of 70 and 90 to participate in a diabetes study. To be eligible, volunteers must not now be taking medication to control their blood sugar. Participants will receive a physical exam, study tablets and relevant laboratory tests at no cost. High Cholesterol Volunteers with high blood cholesterol are being sought to participate in a study at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. Participants must be between the ages of 21 and 70. The purpose of the investigational study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Zocor and Lipitor, drugs known to lower blood cholesterol and decrease the risk of heart disease. Diabetes and High Cholesterol UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick is conducting a drug study to help lower cholesterol levels in individuals who suffer from diabetes and high cholesterol. Volunteers between the ages of 30 and 75, who take Actos or Avandia to control their diabetes, may be eligible to participate. Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick is conducting a study on atopic dermatitis (eczema). IV Antibiotic Research Study Researchers at UMDNJ- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick are looking for healthy volunteers to participate in an IV antibiotic research study. To qualify, participants must be between the ages of 18 and 55 with normal hearing tests. They must participate in four weeks of follow- up after completion of a single dose and five weeks of follow-up after completion of seven doses of the study drug. Volunteers must continue dose escalation and must not take over-the-counter, prescription or herbal supplements. Hypertension Volunteers age 21 and older with high blood pressure are being sought to participate in a study to evaluate the effectiveness of dietary salt restriction on blood pressure variability. The study is being conducted at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick by the Section of Hypertension. Volunteers must have high blood pressure or be taking an antihypertensive medication. Participants who complete the study will receive monetary compensation. Study Of A New Oral Contraceptive Pill Women are needed to participate in a one year study of a new oral contraceptive pill at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. To be eligible, volunteers must be in good health and between the ages of 18 and 35. They will receive a physical exam, a Pap test and study medication at no cost. Implant/Denture Study An implant study for denture stability is being conducted at UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School. The study involves placing four dental implants in the lower jaw to stabilize an existing lower denture. Poor fitting dentures can affect eating, speaking and overall comfort. Since the study is subsidized by a research grant, there will be minimal cost to those who are eligible to participate. Volunteers must be in good health, non-smokers and available for periodic check-ups over a two-year period. The principal investigator for the study is Saul Weiner, DDS. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School is currently conducting multiple studies to investigate the possible causes of medically unexplained fatigue and pain in disorders such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FM). Patients who may have CFS or FM and healthy comparison subjects are needed to participate in the studies. Volunteers must be between the ages of 18 and 55. Medical evaluations and fitness tests are provided at no cost. Participants will be compensated for their time up to $200 per study. The Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene to Prevent Breast Cancer The Cooper Cancer Institute in Voorhees has been selected to participate in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Projects (NSABP) Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR). The study, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), needs 22,000 women to participate nationwide. Volunteers must be postmenopausal women age 35 and older who are at increased risk for developing breast cancer. In STAR, the drugs tamoxifen and raloxifene will be compared for their effectiveness in reducing the occurrence of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Participants will receive either tamoxifen or raloxifene for five years. The principal investigator for the study is Generosa Grana, MD. Office Environment Study Researchers at the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI) in Piscataway are seeking healthy female nonsmokers between the ages of 20 and 45 to participate in a three-year study to investigate the health effects of chemical mixtures found in office environments. The study, now in its second year, is funded by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety. Eligible participants will be exposed in controlled conditions to low-level chemical mixtures such as those found in some office buildings. They will be evaluated for physical symptoms, accuracy of performance on computer tasks and inflammation of the nose. Volunteers will receive a physical examination at no cost. Upon completion of three consecutive weekly sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., participants will receive $300. EOHSI is a joint program of Rutgers and UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
