Cook named President of UMDNJ

The University's Board of Trustees takes great pride in announcing that Stuart D. Cook, MD, was named president of UMDNJ at a special meeting of the board on November 23

During his four and a half months as acting president, Dr. Cook helped the board create an exciting and compelling vision for the future of the University that has received strong support from faculty, students, administrators and staff. The cornerstone of this vision is the enhancement of the University's reputation as a nationally acclaimed academic health center through the aggressive pursuit of external funding for a wide array of research projects in all schools of the University.

Dr. Cook had been acting president of the University since July 1. He served as founding chairman of the Department of Neurosciences at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School since 1972, and was acting dean of the medical school from 1987 to 1989. Dr. Cook has long been a leader in the field of neuroscience and has been internationally recognized for his research in multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

The University community is indeed fortunate to have as its new president a nationally renowned physician, scientist and leader in academic medicine, who is committed to leading this institution into the upper echelons of American universities. I urge each of you to celebrate this milestone with a renewed commitment to a future of excellence and with shared pride in what we can accomplish together

Sincerely,

Isabel Miranda, Esq.
Chair Board of Trustees
