Meet Our Poster Contest Winner
Congratulations to Morgan Ryland! She is a grand prize winner of UMDNJ's 1997 "Let A Healthy You Come Shining Through!" poster contest. Morgan, a fourth grade student at the Oakwood Avenue School in Orange, NJ, is pictured above with school principal Eula A. Penn. The panel of judges, chaired by Suzanne Bergen, wife of UMDNJ president Stanley S. Bergen, Jr., MD, liked Morgan's poster so much that it was reproduced as UMDNJ's 1997 holiday greeting card.

The goal of the contest, open to all fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students in New Jersey, is to encourage classroom discussion about good health habits and the positive things children can do to stay healthy. Every elementary school in the state was invited to participate. More than 1,000 entries were received.

We couldn't agree more with the slogan on Morgan's poster: "Without a doubt you have to be healthy inside and out."

A total of six grand prize winners were selected, one each from northern, central, and southern New Jersey and three at-large winners. The other grand prize winners are: Kasey Tararuj, University Heights School, Mercerville; Caitlin Murphy, Riverton Public School, Riverton; Matt Biondi, Central 5 School, Vauxhall; Steven Gentoso, St. James School, Basking Ridge; and Tyler Casey, Cold Springs School, Gloucester. Each received a $100 savings bond and a $50 gift certificate. Twelve other students selected for honorable mention received $25 gift certificates, and their artwork was made into a 1997 calendar and displayed on the poster contest website (http://www-port.umdnj.edu/umcweb/poster_contest.html). All participants received certificates of recognition.

Winners of the 1998 poster contest will be announced on the poster contest website in late January.

This year's contest was sponsored by Fleet Bank. Prizes were provided by the Gap, Bob's Stores, Modell's, AIWA, M&M/MARS, and CDWorld.
