Midwife Betty Hosford, on call that night, checked Joanne's vital signs, and timed her contractions, which were still fairly weak and infrequent. Joanne was reluctant to get into bed until her contractions intensified.
"Rose's birth was not a pleasant experience," recalled Joanne. "After a long labor I ended up having a cesarean section. This time, I wanted to try for a vaginal delivery. The midwives supported me."
At her final prenatal visit, Joanne shared a laugh with Teresa Marsico, practicing midwife and founder of UMDNJ's Nurse-Midwifery Education Program.
