Memory Loss

A research study is being conducted at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway. The goal of the 12-week study (a total of five visits) is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a drug that assists patients who have memory loss who are also experiencing agitation, restlessness or anxiousness. To be eligible, volunteers must be age 60 and older and in good health with a diagnosis of memory loss due to some type of dementia. Related medical care including study medications will be prescribed at no cost while patients are enrolled. Other screening and eligibility requirements must also be met.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Individuals between the ages of 55 and 90 experiencing mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, who are in generally good health, are being sought to participate in a 12-week research study at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway.

A second research study (a two-part study totaling 36 weeks) is in need of individuals diagnosed with severe Alzheimer’s disease.

To participate, volunteers must be age 50 and older and in generally good health. Both studies will investigate the safety and effectiveness of an experimental drug for the treatment of this disease.

Related medical care including the study medications will be prescribed at no cost while patients are enrolled in the studies. Other screening and eligibility requirements must also be met.

A Diagnostic Test for Alzheimer’s Disease

Participants are needed for a research study to investigate a new diagnostic test for Alzheimer’s disease. Volunteers must be age 40 or older and in good health. Individuals who have been diagnosed with memory problems are eligible regardless of age.

The study is being conducted at Brief Treatment Services, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Piscataway. Participants will be required to make one visit. Environmental Health Research Study

Women are needed to participate in a study at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway to evaluate the health effects of indoor air quality and stress. To be eligible, volunteers must be healthy, non-smokers between the ages of 20 and 45, and be available for a five hour morning session (once a week) for four consecutive weeks. During these sessions, responses to indoor air (typical of office environments) will be measured. Participants will also fill out questionnaires, be given tests of attention and concentration, and be asked to provide nasal and saliva samples. A medical exam will be provided at no cost and upon completion of the study, participants will receive monetary compensation.

Uterine Lining Study

The National Institutes of Health, in conjunction with the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health, are conducting a study to test the uterine lining in both fertile and infertile women. To qualify, participants must be between the ages of 25 and 39, have regular menstrual cycles and have had a child in the last 23 months. Participants will be compensated for time and travel.

High Cholesterol

Volunteers with high blood cholesterol are being sought to participate in a study at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical in New Brunswick. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 80. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Zocor and a new investigational drug, which may lower blood cholesterol and decrease the risk of heart disease. Those eligible will receive a physical exam, study medications and relevant laboratory tests at no charge. Monetary compensation will be provided upon completion.

Oral and Vaginal Hormone Treatment

Menopausal women experiencing vaginal dryness and painful intercourse are being sought to participate in a seven-month oral and vaginal hormone treatment study at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. Participants will receive a physical examination, mammogram, laboratory tests and Pap smear at no cost, and will be paid $175 upon completion of the study. Monetary compensation will be prorated if the volunteer does not complete the study.

A New Oral Contraceptive Pill

Women are needed to participate in a one year study at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick of a new oral contraceptive pill. To be eligible, volunteers must be in good health and between the ages of 18 and 35. They will receive a physical exam, Pap test and study medication at no cost. Participants will be paid $450 upon completion of the study.

Asthma

Non-smokers between the ages of 15 and 65 with a history of asthma are needed to participate in a study to test a medication to treat asthma. Participants will receive free testing, examinations and generous compensation for time and travel.

Autism

At UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, a study is being conducted to investigate how the brain analyzes facial expressions in people with autism as compared with healthy individuals. It involves looking at photographs of faces while a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is being performed. Participants must be right-handed males between the ages of 18 and 30, in good physical health and with no history of mental illness . They will be required to make two visits to Newark over a period of a month and will receive financial compensation for their time and travel.

Implant/Denture Study

An implant study for denture stability is being conducted at UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School. The study involves placing four dental implants in the lower jaw to stabilize an existing lower denture. Poor fitting dentures can affect eating, speaking and overall comfort. Since the study is subsidized by a research grant, there will be minimal cost to those who are eligible to participate.

Volunteers must be in good health, non-smokers and available for periodic check-ups over a two-year period.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School is currently conducting multiple studies to investigate the possible causes of medically unexplained fatigue and pain in disorders such as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia (FM). Patients who may have CFS or FM and healthy comparison subjects are needed to participate in the studies. Volunteers must be between the ages of 18 and 55. Medical evaluations and fitness tests are provided at no cost. Participants will be compensated for their time up to $200 per study. The NJ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Cooperative Research Centers are located at the UMDNJ-Newark campus and at the VA Medical Center in East Orange.

Type I (Juvenile Onset) Diabetes Mellitus and Renal Failure

The Department of Medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick is conducting a four-week study for patients, age 18 and older, with Type I diabetes mellitus and renal failure. The goal of the study is to evaluate the benefits of a new insulin for individuals who suffer from this condition. Monetary compensation is provided to those who qualify.

Diabetes Mellitus with Kidney Complications

Diabetes specialists at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick are conducting a study of a new investigational drug to slow down the progression of kidney complications. To be eligible, participants must have Type I (age 18 to 65) or Type II (age 30 to 70) diabetes and have protein in the urine. Monetary compensation is available to those who complete the study.

Diabetes

The Department of Medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick is looking for volunteers between the ages of 70 and 90 to participate in a diabetes study. To be eligible, volunteers must not now be taking medication to control their blood sugar. Participants will receive a physical exam, study tablets and relevant laboratory tests at no cost.

Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)

UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick is conducting a study on atopic dermatitis (eczema). To qualify, volunteers must be 6 years old or older and available for four weeks to 10 months (depending on the study). Participants will receive study medication, examinations and laboratory tests at no cost. Some studies offer monetary compensation upon completion.

Psoriasis

The Clinical Research Center at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick is seeking volunteers with psoriasis to participate in research studies being conducted at the school. Eligible participants will receive physical examinations by board-certified dermatologists, laboratory tests and medication at no cost. Some programs have monetary compensation.

The Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene to Prevent Breast Cancer

The Cooper Cancer Institute in Voorhees has been selected to participate in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project’s (NSABP) Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR). The study, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), needs 22,000 women to participate nationwide. Volunteers must be postmenopausal women age 35 and older who are at increased risk for developing breast cancer. In STAR, the drugs tamoxifen and raloxifene will be compared for their effectiveness in reducing the occurrence of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Participants will receive either tamoxifen or raloxifene for five years.

Cancer Clinical Trials

Scientists at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) in New Brunswick develop and conduct clinical trials for oncology patients who do not respond to traditional therapies and for those with cancers that do not have a standard treatment. The focus of these studies is to develop new treatment options and drugs, as well as preventive and diagnostic techniques to fight the disease. CINJ is the only cancer center in the state of New Jersey designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and one of 13 NCI-clinical cancer centers in the country. CINJ offers advanced comprehensive care and its research has the potential to transform laboratory results into clinical applications that reduce cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality.

Office of Environmental Study

Researchers at the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI) in Piscataway are seeking healthy female nonsmokers between the ages of 20 and 45 to participate in a three-year study to investigate the health effects of chemical mixtures found in office environments. The study, now in its second year, is funded by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety. Eligible participants will be exposed in controlled conditions to low-level chemical mixtures such as those found in some office buildings. They will be evaluated for physical symptoms, accuracy of performance oncomputer tasks and inflammation of the nose. Volunteers will receive a physical examination at no cost. Upon completion of three consecutive weekly sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., participants will receive $300.
