Tuberculosis is still the world's number one infectious killer - but most of us think: "Not in our town, not in our time, not in our children's schools."

Maria's stepfather died of TB six months ago - the same day the 13-year-old tested positive for the infection. She was scared. She had watched the once strong man waste away - coughing, forever coughing, sleepless, losing weight, always exhausted. Maria's chest x-ray showed the tell-tale spots on her lungs. She had night sweats and was losing weight. She had active TB.
