Grants

Andrea Sawczuk, DDS, PhD, assistant professor, Oral Pathology, Biology and Diagnostic Science, received a one-year, $25,000 grant from the Foundation of UMDNJ to study the "Characterization of Swallowing and Respiratory Afferents to Hypoglossal Motoneurons."

Randall Wilk, DDS, PhD, MD, assistant professor, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, received a one-year, $25,000 grant from the Foundation of UMDNJ for the "Functional Comparison of Sensate versus Insensate Radial Forearm Free Flaps in the Reconstruction of Tongue and Floor-of-Mouth Defects."

 

Publications

"Lyme Disease: Awareness for the New Jersey Dentist," by Gary Heir, DMD associate clinical professor, Oral Biology, Pathology and Diagnostic Sciences, was in the Journal of the New Jersey Dental Association, January 1998. He also authored "The Challenge of Orofacial Pain," in The Quintessence, April 1998, Japan.

"Oral Lesions in Minority Children with HIV Infection," by Andrei Barasch, DMD assistant professor, Oral Pathology, Biology and Diagnostic Sciences, was in the Journal of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Radiology and Endodontics, Vol. 85 - April 1998. He also authored "Prevalence of Oral Lesions in HIV-Infected Minority Children," in the Journal of Dental Research, Vol. 77 - March 1998.

Honors

Gary Heir, DMD, associate clinical professor, Oral Biology, Pathology and Diagnostic Sciences, was elected to a one-year term as president of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain during its 23rd Annual Scientific Session, held at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, DC.

 

Professional Activities

Richard Pertes, DDS, clinical professor, Oral Pathology, Biology and Diagnostic Sciences, presented "New Concepts in TMS and Orofacial Pain" at the medical school of Keto University in Tokyo, Japan. He also presented "Differential Diagnosis of Orofacial Pain" and "Clinical Examination Procedures" to Japanese dentists at the TMD/Orofacial Pain Center of Tokyo.


 

The first Violence Institute seed grants, totaling $129,428, were distributed to 13 recipients: G. Honors

The UMDNJ-School of Nursing's Honor Society was inducted as a member chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, Inc. at a chartering ceremony held in Edison. The school's chapter name is Omicron Pi.

Nurse, Teacher, Patient Advocate

Mary G. Boland, RN, MSN, FAAN, received the 1998 Governor's Nursing Merit Award. She is the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Professor of Community Pediatric Nursing at the University's School of Nursing, and was honored for her extensive work as a nurse researcher.

World renowned as an author, teacher and advocate for women and children, Boland's primary area of interest is health care delivery to children with chronic conditions and HIV/AIDS. She pioneered the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud International Pediatric HIV Training Program at UMDNJ. It provides tools and training to health care workers in developing countries so they can better care for HIV-infected children and their families. In existence for more than seven years, the program has trained some 130 health care providers in 20 countries. Mary Bowland


Mary Boland in Lesa's Garden, planted in the memory of people who have died of AIDS

Boland is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and has received numerous honors. She was appointed by President Clinton to the Presidential Advisory Committee on AIDS in 1995, and that same year was appointed by Governor Whitman to the Governor's Advisory Council on AIDS in New Jersey. She joined the UNAIDS Planning Committee for the World AIDS Campaign in 1998. She is currently a doctoral candidate at Columbia University's School of Public Health.
