Six-foot, ten-inch Hassan Shabazz was an avid basketball player until just five years ago. "He loved the game," says his mother, Marion Shabazz. "Every afternoon he was out on the courts. He never got tired."

But severe abdominal pains and shortness of breath brought the 22-year-old to the emergency room in September, 1994. X-rays showed a seriously enlarged heart, working at only 10 percent of capacity. Hassan's health has been "up and down like a staircase ever since," says his mother.
