A Researcher of Note

Danny Reinberg, PhD, professor of biochemistry at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), has won UMDNJ’s Award for Outstanding Research Achievement for 2002. The University established a program in 1998 to recognize, stimulate and support innovative faculty research. The award is given every two years and carries with it a $50,000 prize given by the Foundation of UMDNJ.

"Dr. Reinberg’s work is an excellent example of the high quality research being conducted on a daily basis throughout UMDNJ," said George M. Heinrich, MD, vice chairman and interim president of the Foundation.

The program committee established a rigorous peer review process involving scientists from other prestigious universities to review the proposals submitted for consideration.

Reinberg, who earned his doctorate from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, has been with UMDNJ since 1986. His laboratory is investigating the mechanisms that control the regulation of gene expression in mammalian cells. The Award Review Committee recognized him as "an outstanding scientist and leader in the field of understanding how genes convert information into messages governing development."

His research has been funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the National Institutes of Health, The American Cancer Society, the National Science Foundation and the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research.
