This issue of UMDNJ Magazine is a celebration of the University's "top docs." You will meet 12 faculty members recently named to America's "top doctors," three among the researchers most cited in the medical literature worldwide, and nine from our dental school who edit prestigious journals in their fields.

Thirty-one UMDNJ physicians - a record number - earned a spot in the latest edition of America's Top Doctors, published by Castle Connolly. What exactly does this mean? The physicians in the guide are nominated by their peers as well as a select group of medical administrators. Castle Connolly then researches the nominees, taking into consideration the following characteristics: education, residency, board certification, fellowships, professional reputation, hospital and medical school faculty appointment, experience and disciplinary history, and interpersonal skills. The result is a listing of outstanding specialists from around the country.

We also include researchers who made another type of "top doc" roster: those who are listed by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) as the most highly cited researchers in the world. According to ISI, citation is a direct measure of influence on the literature of a subject and is also a strong indicator of scientific contribution. The University boasts eight of these most prolific and energetic writers. We are proud of our stellar faculty and hope that you enjoy reading about them.
