The Fourth of July holiday means that summer is in full swing. Worth noting is a warning from Dr. Rudolph Wagner, clinical associate professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, that babies should not be out in the bright sunlight without a brimmed hat or an umbrella to shade their eyes. The younger the child, the clearer his natural eye lenses, and the clearer the natural eye lenses, the more susceptible a child is to damage from UV exposure.

WIC Program Expands Food Options to Reduce Childhood Obesity

The University Hospital Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, designed to help low income families eat and live healthy, will soon introduce new and improved food packages that offer more nutritious food options.

The food packages, approved last year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service, will replace older packages that have been used for 30 years. The packages are more culturally diverse and are intended to promote healthier, nutritious eating habits.

According to Valeria Jacobs Andrews, program administrator for the WIC program, the packages are part of their ongoing efforts to reduce the number of children who are obese and overweight. Research shows that poor nutrition during early childhood increases the chances of anemia, limits memory development and a child’s ability to learn, and adds to health care costs.
