![]() The Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School has been sponsoring an award-winning educational photo exhibit, "Pandemic: Imaging AIDS," in the Medical Science Building on the Newark campus since Oct. 23. The exhibit, first presented in 2002 at the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, has since toured internationally and will be on view at UMDNJ through World AIDS Day, December 1, 2008.

Dr. Joel DeLisa, professor and chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, was named a Gold Humanism Honor Society 2008 Honoree. The award was presented at the annual AAMC meeting in San Antonio on November 1. The Gold Foundation recognized DeLisa for leading by example, for influencing innovation and commitment to assessing physicians’ humanism and professional behavior, and for making a difference on behalf of the profession of medicine.

Researchers from the Public Health Research Institute at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a technique for imaging individual messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules inside cells, a discovery that could result in more rapid, microscope-based diagnostics, helping to identify cancerous cells earlier. The findings were recently published in Nature Methods. Dr. Sanjay Tyagi, of the Public Health Research Institute was a co-author of the article. Read more.

Dr. Joseph R. Bertino, professor of medicine and pharmacology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and associate director and chief scientific officer at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, was presented with the John Ultmann Award for Contributions to Lymphoma at the Lymphoma and Myeloma 2008 International Congress on Hematologic Malignancies. The award noted Bertino’s outstanding contributions and dedication to cancer research and scientific inquiry. He has been recognized internationally for his role in finding treatments for leukemia and lymphoma.
