Largest Contract Ever Expands UMDNJ Clinical Services in Prisons

As of October 1, 2008, UMDNJ will provide medical and dental services to inmates and civilly committed resident populations within New Jersey’s Department of Corrections (NJDOC) through University Correctional Health Care (UCHC). An agreement signed last July will make the University responsible for medical staffing – from physicians, advanced nurse practitioners, and physician assistants to RNs, LPNs and medical technicians – in 14 state correctional facilities and two residential programs.

UCHC assumed responsibility for mental health services for inmates within the NJDOC in 2005 and was recently commended by department officials for exceptional performance. The new contract is an extension of services; it is for more than $100 million and will encompass 550 positions and 800 individuals.

Christopher Kosseff serves as the CEO of the two distinct entities: UCHC and University Behavioral HealthCare (UBHC). A new medical director, Dr. Arthur Brewer, will join UCHC by mid-October. Brewer comes from the University of Massachusetts, where he had oversight of a similar arrangement with that state’s correctional facilities.

New Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer Named

Daniel J. Walsh has joined the University as senior vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer. Prior to coming to UMDNJ, he was executive vice president, chief ethics and compliance officer, and chief audit executive for Cardinal Health in Ohio, a leading global provider of healthcare products and services.

At UMDNJ, Walsh will be responsible for the day to day leadership of the Ethics and Compliance Office, overseeing that function throughout the University’s eight schools and five campuses. Read more.

University Hospital Holds Open Enrollment for Uninsured Children

The University Hospital and its auxiliary held two open enrollment days at the Newark campus where parents could register their uninsured children for NJ FamilyCare, the free/low cost health insurance program for eligible children and teens 18 years of age and younger.

The enrollment days were offered as part of the “Covering Kids and Families Back to School Healthcare Coverage Campaign,” held annually in August and September. The campaign is a statewide initiative organized by the New Jersey Hospital Association and state leaders to encourage hospitals to host enrollment days at the beginning of the school year. Read more.
