James J. Rowan, CPA, Vice President for Internal Audit and Investigations, joined the President’s Office as Chief of Staff, effective September 2.

NJMS Student Recipient of Fu Scholarship  

Kenneth Wannemacher, a student in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), is the first recipient of the S.C. Joseph Fu Scholarship. The award will be presented annually to a student studying for a doctorate in the department.

The late Dr. Fu (picture at right) was Professor Emeritus of biochemistry/molecular biology and ophthalmology at NJMS and acting dean at UMDNJ-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS). He also established Students for Medicine, a summer program for incoming minority students at UMDNJ-University Hospital.

The $25,000 endowment supporting the scholarship is funded by gifts from his widow, Susan Fu, Dr. B.J. Wagner, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at NJMS and interim associate dean at GSBS, friends, family and colleagues.

 

UMDNJ Study Examines Effect of a Traditional Chinese Medical Practice on Osteoarthritis  

Dr. Adam Perlman, chair of primary care and executive director of the Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions, was co-author of a study of Qigong therapy, a form of traditional Chinese medical practice, and its effects on osteoarthritis of the knee.

The study was published in the April 2008 edition of Clinical Rheumatology. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the US and osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting about 21 million Americans. Read more.

Hospital Hosts Pre-Ramadan Health Fair  

UMDNJ-University Hospital (UH), the Islamic Community Health Collaborative, The Healthcare Foundation Center for Humanism and Medicine at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), and the Office of Special Programs at NJMS hosted a free Pre-Ramadan Health Fair at the Newark campus on August 23. The fair, open to Muslims and non-Muslims, focused on good health as it pertains to followers of Islam preparing for Ramadan.

The event included screenings, speakers, and displays twith information on fasting and nutrition, community-based organizations and self-help programs.
