Nearly a century after history's most lethal flu pandemic faded away, survivors' blood streams still carry super-potent protection against the 1918 virus, demonstrating the remarkable durability of the human immune system. Scientists tested the blood of 32 people aged 92 to 102 who were exposed to the 1918 flu and found antibodies protecting against the old flu strain. Researchers manipulated those antibodies into a vaccine and found that it kept alive all the mice they had injected with the killer flu, according to a study published recently in the journal Nature. The study co-author, Dr. Eric Altschuler, assistant professor, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, doesn't normally study flu. But an old TV show depicting a town improbably infected with the 1918 flu prompted Dr. Altschuler to explore the idea of testing people more than 90 years old for antibodies. The NIH, which paid for much of the study, connected him with experts in the field and he found the elderly antibody donors.

In recognition of National Health Center Week, Gov. Jon S. Corzine and Health and Senior Services Commissioner Heather Howard visited the Eric B. Chandler Health Center in New Brunswick to recognize the vital services that health centers and health professionals provide to New Jersey's most vulnerable residents. Gov. Corzine announced that despite an extraordinarily difficult budget year, the state was able to provide a $1 million increase to reimburse the centers providing medical, dental and specialty care to people who are either uninsured, enrolled in NJ FamilyCare or recipients of Medicaid and Medicare. The Eric B. Chandler Health Center provided 56,000 patient visits last year and is operated jointly by the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Eric B. Chandler Community Advisory Board. When circumstances forced a second-year medical student at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School to miss a few lectures before an exam, he didn't panic. Instead, he went to Apple Computer's iTunes U Web site and downloaded podcasts of the missed lectures. Podcasts are digital media files, distributed via the Internet. They can be downloaded and played back over a portable media device, such as an iPod, or via a personal computer. This year, through a pilot progam with Apple Computer, NJMS is storing podcasts of some lectures on the iTunes U server. The service is free.
