Dr. Maureen Huhmann, a clinical dietitian at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and assistant professor at the UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions, has been elected incoming chair of the Oncology Dietetic Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association. She will serve from 2009 through 2010. Read more.

New Students Welcomed at White Coat Cermonies  

More than 550 men and women formally join the ranks of the next generation of physicians and dentists during White Coat ceremonies at UMDNJ schools this month. The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, which is dedicated to fostering humanism in medicine, launched the first White Coat ceremony in 1993. The ceremony has since become a cherished rite of passage for first-year medical and dental students across the country. During the White Coat ceremony, the incoming students are joined by family, friends and faculty to celebrate the students’ first steps in a career dedicated to service, research and healing.

UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine and UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School held ceremonies this week. UMDNJ’s New Jersey Medical School and New Jersey Dental School have ceremonies scheduled for the coming weeks. Read more.

 

Student Project Published in Professional Journal  

In an article published on August 1 in the Journal of Healthcare for the Poor and Underserved, students and faculty advisors at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School discussed the success of the Promise Clinic, a service project created in 2004 and operated by medical students to address access to healthcare for New Brunswick’s uninsured residents.

The article reports on the implementation of the clinic under the supervision of volunteer physicians and students who get clinical training opportunities through medical school as they serve as primary care providers. Read more.

 

Physical Therapist Receives 2008 Service Award  

Dr. Judith Deutsch, professor and director of research in Virtual Environments and Rehabilitation Sciences (Rivers) Lab at UMDNJ School of Health Related Professions, is the recipient of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) 2008 Lucy Blair Service Award, which recognizes members who have made exceptional contributions to APTA.

Dr. Deutsch is editor in chief for APTA’s Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy and associate editor for the Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation. She has received the SHRP Excellence in Teaching and Research Awards and was inducted into the Master Educators' Guild in 2004. Read more.
