![]() Dr. Paul Langer, assistant professor and residency program director at the Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, is the recipient of the Straatsma Award for Excellence in Resident Education for 2008. Established by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, the award recognizes the critical role of program directors and their contributions to academic medicine.

Upon the recommendation of UMDNJ President Dr. William F. Owen, Jr., the UMDNJ Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Thomas Cavalieri dean of UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM). He has served as interim dean since April 2006. Throughout his nearly 30 years of service to UMDNJ, the dean has been a tireless advocate for the elderly and for osteopathic medical education. Dr. Cavalieri’s guidance of the geriatric health and education programs at SOM has resulted in the school being recognized as one of the nation’s best for geriatric medical education. He was the founding director of the SOM Center for Aging, which has grown into the New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging, one of the University’s statewide centers of excellence. As a nationally recognized geriatric educator and clinician, Dr. Cavalieri has lectured extensively and written numerous articles on many issues related to the medical care of the elderly. His research includes several federal grants related to aging, faculty development in research, and physician training at both the predoctoral and postgraduate levels from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/Health Resources and Services Administration and the National Institute on Aging.

The New Jersey Center for Public Health Preparedness at UMDNJ School of Public Health (SPH) sponsored free conferences on July 21 and 25 to review the state’s recently updated childhood vaccination requirements. Dr. Peter Wenger, associate professor of preventive medicine and community health at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, presented “Immunizing Young Children: Preventing Disease” and “Immunizing Older Children and Adults: Protecting Us All.” He is also director of Project Vaccinate, an immunization initiative directed by the Newark Department of Health and Human Services. Both conferences, co-sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services and The Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative, included presentations on the human papillomavirus and methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus.

The UMDNJ-School of Nursing has honored 19 students at its annual Nursing Student Ambassador Induction and Recognition Ceremony. Each year, 20 to 30 students are selected to join the Nursing Student Ambassador Program as liaisons for the school. They are chosen for their academic achievement, community service and volunteerism. Also recognized was Newark Child and Family Well-Being director Maria Vizcarrondo. She was inducted as an honorary member in recognition of her longstanding commitment to education, health and community service. The Nursing Student Ambassador Program was established in 2004 at the Newark campus by the school’s Center for Academic Success. This year, the program has expanded to the Stratford campus. Pictured are Amy Wong and Darryl Stewart, students in the accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, who were named Ambassadors of Distinction.
