Broadway House and Cookie Johnson Join Together for HIV/AIDS Campaign  

The Broadway House for Continuing Care teamed up with Cookie Johnson, the wife of Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and the “I Stand With Magic” campaign to sponsor an empowerment summit titled “Women, Relationships and Health”on July 15.

Mrs. Johnson visited Newark as part of an east coast tour where she covered topics that included “Our Time to be Healthy/HIV and Education,” HIV Prevention and Testing” and “Faith and HIV.” She also shared her experiences with members of the community on “Life with Magic…A Story of Love, Faith and Conquering.”

 

Quarters for the Cure Campaign Raises Funds for CINJ  

More than $15,000 was presented to The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) Foundation following its annual “Quarters for the Cure” campaign. The fund-raiser encouraged more than 5,000 school age children throughout the state to collect pocket change for cancer research, patient care, education and community outreach at CINJ, a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The top fund-raiser was Milltown Primary School in Bridgewater, which raised a record-setting $5,100. The Foundation presented the school with a certificate of appreciation for its hard work and generosity. Also recognized were the second- and third-place winners: Elms Elementary in Jackson and James Monroe Elementary in Edison.

 

Visiting Faculty from Botswana Tour The University Hospital  

Two faculty members from the Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) in Botswana visited the Newark campus from June 30-July 4, as part of a twinning project between IHS and UMDNJ’s François-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Center. As part of the visit, they toured UMDNJ- University Hospital to learn about services for HIV/AIDS in terms of the blood blank, infection control, isolation areas, and laboratories and clinics.

In partnership with UMDNJ-School of Nursing and UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions, the FXB Center facilitates a faculty exchange program that offers technical and human resources to prepare healthcare workers to meet Botswana's needs for HIV prevention, care, treatment and support services.
