Two University publications won awards recently from the International Academy of the Visual Arts. UMDNJ Magazine received a Communicator Award of Excellence and UMDNJ Research garnered a Communicator Award of Distinction.


RWJMS Professor Receives Distinguished Service Award  

Recognized by cancer specialists from around the world, Dr. Joseph Bertino, University Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, interim director and chief scientific officer at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, has been honored with the Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement at the 44th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

The award recognizes his dedication to cancer research and scientific inquiry, as well his "exceptional record of service to the Society." Dr. Bertino was commended for his role in finding curative treatments in the areas of leukemia and lymphoma. His lab is currently studying the relationship between tumor suppressor gene abnormalities and drug resistance, and the use of drug resistant genes to protect bone marrow from chemotherapy toxicity.

 

UMDNJ and Newark Middle Schools Honor Students for Essays to Stop Violence  

The Violence Institute of New Jersey and UMDNJ University Behavioral HealthCare, in partnership with the Newark Public Schools’ Office of Extended School Day Programs, this week recognized the winners of an essay writing contest that enlisted middle school students in efforts to curb the spread of violence.

Jesenia Reyes from Abington Avenue School and George McKenzie from Science Park School are the finalists in the Newark Do the Write Thing Essay Challenge Program, an initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence. They each received a $250 savings bond for future educational endeavors. They will also be honored at a national recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C., where their essays will be published and placed in the Library of Congress.

 

The University Hospital Garners Award for Safe Patient Outcomes  

The Quality Improvement Department at UMDNJ-University Hospital received a $106,250 incentive award from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey’s (BCBSNJ) Hospital Recognition Program for providing improvement in hospital performance in the areas of patient safety and satisfaction and clinical outcomes.

Launched in 2006, the program offers hospitals financial and public recognition based on a nationally standardized methodology to assess the value of patient care and performance along two dimensions — the quality of care hospitals provide and how efficiently they deliver it.
