Cholesterol and Blood Pressure Study by RWJMS Cardiologist Published

The results of a new analysis of a Treating to New Targets (TNT) study show that intensive low-density lipoprotein cholesterol-lowering in patients with stable coronary heart disease, whose systolic blood pressure was less than 140 mmHg, reduced the risk of heart attacks, strokes and resuscitated cardiac arrest by 42 percent.

The study is led by Dr. John Kostis, the John G. Detwiler professor of cardiology, and professor and chair of medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and chief of medical service at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The five-year, 10,001 patient TNT study was funded by Pfizer, Inc., and published in the May 2008 issue of the Journal of Clinical Hypertension.

UMDNJ and NCC Introduce Newark Seniors to CONDUCTORCISE

Nearly 100 older adults learned how to lead a symphony orchestra and exercise their upper bodies while conducting 17th century compositions when the UMDNJ-Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (ICAM), a center at UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions, and New Community Corporation (NCC) hosted Maestro David Dworkin, creator of CONDUCTORCISE® .

Dworkin, who created CONDUCTORCISE® after making the transition from accomplished clarinetist and orchestra conductor to a fitness guru, led the seniors at the NCC’s Extended Care Facility through his acclaimed "symphonic aerobics" workout. Combining the musical, educational and aerobic, CONDUCTORCISE® gets participants enthused about classical music and keeps them engaged, thinking and in motion. According to Dr. Adam Perlman, executive director of ICAM, they are the key components necessary for healthy aging and staying fit.
