UMDNJ figured prominently in the newest list by U.S. News & World Report of America's best graduate schools. The magazine's list of top medical schools for 2009 included the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine among the nation's best for Geriatrics, while the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School was selected for both Research and Primary Care. In the magazine's list of the nation's best graduate health education programs, the UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions was picked for its Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Counseling and Physician Assistant programs.

The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School's oral biology faculty seventh in 2007 for scholarly productivity among universities that offered Ph.D. programs in oral biology and craniofacial science. The index examined a total of 164,843 faculty members listed on Ph.D. programs' web sites. Each faculty member's scholarly productivity was measured on five possible factors: the number of books written; the number of journal publications (articles) written; the number of citations of journal publications (articles); federal-grant dollars awarded; and honors and awards. In addition to being ranked seventh overall, the department had the highest percentage of faculty getting new grants, at 77 percent, and garnered the fourth highest total value of new grants per faculty, $164,987. |

The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) last week unveiled its new Biomedical Informatics Program. Biomedical informatics is the intellectual marriage of math, science and computers used in concert to understand what regulates the normal behavior of cells and how its breakdown gives rise to uncontrolled cell growth, i.e. cancer. The aim of researchers at CINJ is to use this knowledge and cutting-edge genomics technology to develop an individual genetic profile of a patient, with the goal of being able to identify specific treatment options and improve diagnosis for patients with cancer and other diseases. CINJ is a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
