It is with great pleasure that I announce our notification by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, of their decision to reaffirm UMDNJ’s accreditation.
As you know, the University had been on probation with Middle States since June of 2006, pending resolution of numerous items pertaining to governance, leadership accountability, financial reporting, and integrity. After a concerted effort by our Board of Trustees, Administration, Deans, faculty and staff to enact the necessary reforms and controls, UMDNJ was able to demonstrate to this accrediting body that our institution has in fact been transformed into an organization worthy of the public’s trust.
As part of their review process, the Middle States survey team conducted on site evaluation of our organization. The findings of the survey team can serve as a major determining factor for their Board’s final decision. I specifically call out this step to all members of our University community, because it was at the conclusion of this site visit, that our reviewers specifically commented on the palpable change in spirit and enthusiasm of our team members. They remarked how the organization, which has had to weather so much over the past few years, has pulled together when many other institutions may have become more fragmented and dysfunctional.
Our ability to pull together when it is most needed, should serve as a signal to everyone, both inside and outside of UMDNJ, that our organization remains strong even in the face of adversity. I congratulate all of you on this important accreditation action, because this decision reflects on your performance and commitment to making our institution even better going forward.
Again, thank you and congratulations!

William F. Owen, Jr., MD
