For Non-supervisory Staff:
President Owen has added two more sessions on the Newark campus to allow more staff, especially second and third shift team members, the chance to attend the forum "Your Protection in the UMDNJ Workplace: The New Culture of Zero Tolerance for Inappropriate Behavior." These will be held in H 342-349 at University Hospital on Monday, November 5 at 7:30 a.m. and on Thursday, November 8 at 5 p.m.

While attendance at these sessions is voluntary, any staff member who wishes to attend must be provided the opportunity to do so by his or her supervisor. Of course, if the proposed attendee fills a critical position and cannot be relieved for the 1 hour time period, arrangements will be made to share meeting content in other ways.

President's Forums Focus on Zero Tolerance for Inappropriate Behavior

University President Dr. William F. Owen, Jr., has been joined by leaders from the Office of Legal Management and the Office of Ethics and Compliance to kick off a series of informational sessions that discussed the laws and supporting UMDNJ policies that protect University team members from hostile or otherwise inappropriate work environments.

The first meetings, held last week in Stratford, Newark, and New Brunswick, touched on issues such as reporting real or perceived misconduct, preventing harassment and discriminatory practices in the workplace, and the protections and responsibilities for staff under the new whistleblower/anti-retaliation policies. Non-supervisory team members were invited to participate in the first sessions; subsequent forums will be conducted for supervisory and management employees and for faculty and faculty administrators.

Lester Aron, Esq., senior vice president and general counsel, and Michael Clarke, Esq., vice president/chief compliance and ethics officer, will be on hand to participate in the discussions and answer audience questions along with President Owen.

Dr. Karen Raphael was awarded a $3.1 million grant from the NIH-National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to conduct a comprehensive sleep study on the causes of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which are characterized by jaw and facial pain that often radiates to the neck and shoulders.

They will compare and contrast the characteristics of facial pain among 180 women by simultaneously examining a multitude of possible causes of TMD pain.
