A professor and two students from the UMDNJ-School of Nursing received the 2007 Humanism in Healthcare Award from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey at an awards ceremony held at the Dolce Hamilton Park in Florham Park. They were among 52 nursing students, nursing school faculty and healthcare employees nominated by their institutions for demonstrating extraordinary compassion for patients and their families. The recipients are, from left, Donna Cill, a student in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program; Dr. Dula Pacquiao, associate professor and director of the Stanley Bergen, Jr. Center for Multicultural Education, Research, and Practice; and Debra Sutton, a May 2007 graduate of the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program who is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing at UMDNJ. |

African Americans with type 1 diabetes have a greater chance of vision loss, according to Dr. Monique S. Roy, a professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at UMDN- New Jersey Medical School. She conducted a six year study with colleague Dr. Joan H. Skurnick, associate professor of Preventive Medicine & Community Health at the medical school. Drs. Roy and Skurnick followed approximately 500 African-Americans to determine the incidence of visual loss and associated risk factors in African-Americans with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Their findings appeared in the Archives of Ophthalmology. |

Dr. Alan C. Monheit, the associate director of the Center for Health Economics and Health Policy at the UMDNJ School of Public Health, has been named the new editor of the health policy journal INQUIRY, a peer reviewed scholarly journal now in its 44th year of publication. Dr. Monheit’s work has been published in numerous professional journals, and he served as co editor for two books: State Insurance Market Reform: Toward Inclusive and Sustainable Health Insurance Markets; and Informing American Health Care Policy: The Dynamics of Medical Expenditure and Insurance Surveys, 1977 1996.
