Mobile Unit Brings Medical Care to City Children

UMDNJ and The Children’s Health Fund joined with Newark Mayor Cory Booker and key legislative and community leaders on July 26 to celebrate and launch a new program that is bringing medical care to inner-city children.

The New Jersey Children’s Health Project, a partnership of The Children’s Health Fund (CHF) and UMDNJ-School of Nursing, will use a state-of-the-art Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) to deliver primary healthcare services to children and their families in Newark and Elizabeth. The nursing school is managing and staffing the project, and the MMU was provided by CHF.

The school contributed $375,000 to the project, which has also received a $250,000 grant from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey and a five-year, $1.7 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Journal Publishes Results of NJMS Study on Lifespan and Stress

A study on lifespan and stress resistance was conducted by researchers at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), who were recently awarded a $10 million grant from the National Institute on Aging. The findings of the study were published in the July 27th edition of Cell, an internationally acclaimed scientific journal.

The researchers studied an enzyme in the sympathetic nervous system and its effects on the heart, which they believe helps prevent heart disease. This study is the cornerstone of a $10 million “Longevity and Stress Resistance” Program Project Grant recently awarded to Dr. Stephen Vatner, University Professor and Chair of the Department of Cell Biology & Molecular Medicine at NJMS.

New Grants Support Nursing Education

UMDNJ received two federal grants totaling nearly $1.7 million for its nursing education programs. The grants will support continued development of a master’s program in clinical leadership and a master’s program that offers nurses several options for specializing in women’s health.

The UMDNJ-School of Nursing was awarded $894,726 to support the development of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) track of its Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) program, which the school implemented as part of a national pilot project. The school also received $797,771 for its new Women’s Health Program, which offers education options that prepare nurses to provide primary and reproductive care to women across the lifespan.
