![]() The Autism Center of New Jersey Medical School at UMDNJ hosted a symposium this week that looked at the role faith communities play in assisting individuals living with autism. The event, made possible by a grant from The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation, focused on ways that faith communities can be supportive to individuals with autism and those who love them.

Recognized by cancer specialists from around the globe, two noted leaders at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) were honored with the inaugural Statesman Award at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago. Joseph R. Bertino, MD, Interim Director and Chief Scientific Officer at CINJ and University Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) and Joseph Aisner, MD, Chief Medical Officer at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Professor of Medicine and Environmental and Occupational Medicine at RWJMS, were recognized for their significant societal contributions. ASCO also recognized David Gorski, MD, PhD, surgical oncologist at CINJ and Associate Professor of Surgery at RWJMS. He was presented with the 2007 Advanced Clinical Research Award (ACRA) in Breast Cancer.

On June 13, the Child Abuse Research Education and Service (CARES) Institute at the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine hosted the first of two national experts coming to New Jersey this month to present free educational programs for professionals from all disciplines who work with abused or neglected children. "The Nature of Nurture: Biology, Environment and the Drug Exposed Child" was presented by Dr. Ira J. Chasnoff, president of the Children's Research Triangle and a professor of pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Chasnoff is one of the nation's leading experts on the effects of maternal drugs on newborn infants and children. On June 26, the CARES Institute will present "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Traumatic Grief" by Dr. Elissa J. Brown, an associate professor of psychology and the director of the Prevention of Adverse Reactions to Negative Events and Related Stress (PARTNERS) Program at St. John's University in New York.

Thomas W. Kenyon, Jr., has been appointed to the position of vice president for supply chain management. He joined UMDNJ in November 2006 as executive director, University Support Services. In this new post, Kenyon will have direct oversight responsibility for the university-wide acquisition process of all goods and services, the materials management process, and logistical services. He will continue to work with staff members to develop and implement the recommendations of the Purchasing Review Team Task Force, which was established to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness of delivering goods and services. Prior to joining the University, he led initiatives for four years at the New Jersey Department of Treasury Purchase Bureau that were designed to improve contracting and product/service delivery processes statewide. In addition, he spent more than 23 years in the areas of procurement and materials management for the pharmaceutical and utility industries. He holds a degree in administration from Kean University and was one of the founding members of the Center for Supply Chain Management, in the graduate school at Rutgers.
