![]() The Tobacco Dependence Program at the UMDNJ-School of Public Health in New Brunswick marked "World No Tobacco Day," May 30, with special programs and tours of the facility. Former smokers who successfully quit with the help of the Tobacco Dependence Program were on hand to share personal stories of their struggles with tobacco addiction.

A $1 million gift to the Foundation of UMDNJ from Central New Jersey residents Dr. Gary and Janis Grover will help finance research for scientists in physiology and biophysics at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The Grovers established The Janis and Gary Grover Endowed Professorship in Physiology and Biophysics at RWJMS because they are passionate about supporting scientists. Dr. Grover is currently the director of pharmacology of Eurofins, a biotechnology company. In addition, he has taught students for more than 20 years as an adjunct professor at the medical school. Mrs. Grover is director of marketing for an international food importer.

Mental health professionals treating nicotine addicted patients with mental illness will now have access to a manual offering a special group treatment intervention approach to stem tobacco use and dependence. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey is distributing nationally Learning About Healthy Living, a wellness publication funded by the New Jersey State Division of Mental Health Services. Tobacco use and dependence is very common among people with serious mental illness and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, according to the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors, Medical Directors Council. People with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than Americans without a mental illness.

At the Annual Retreat on Cancer Research in New Jersey, experts from The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) took part in an interactive public forum designed to develop a framework for action to combat cancer among 15- to 39-year-olds. According to a recent report issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), cancer in this population represents a significant health problem and presents a broad range of challenges. The annual gathering, now in its eleventh year, encourages leading experts in the basic science and clinical aspects of cancer to join together to share their work with each other and the public. It is a joint venture between CINJ and the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research. This year’s event was held on the Piscataway Campus of the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
