Dr. Thomas Cavalieri and Dr. James Weese were recently named among the "top doctors" in Philadelphia Magazine’s annual survey of physicians. Dr. Cavalieri, the interim dean of the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine and founding director of the New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging, was selected in the field of geriatrics; and Dr. Weese, professor of surgery and director of oncology at the medical school, was named to the magazine’s list of the area’s best surgeons.

A study presented at the American Thoracic Society 2007 International Conference by a UMDNJ researcher found that when a pregnant woman's weight was taken into account, sleep apnea was associated with a doubling of the incidence of gestational diabetes and a fourfold increase in the risk of pregnancy-induced hypertension. Dr. Hatim Youssef of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School was one of the researchers who analyzed data from all pregnancies associated with sleep apnea, gestational diabetes, and pregnancy-induced high blood pressure nationwide in 2003. Pregnancy can worsen sleep apnea, especially during the third trimester when a woman's weight is greatest, the study determined.

Two oncology nurses received scholarship recognition during Nurses Day at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ). The event recognizes the important role of the nursing staff in the 74,000 patient visits each year at CINJ. Jacqueline Manago, RN, BSN, OCN, the Bone Marrow Transplant Coordinator at CINJ, was honored for excellence in clinical practice. Leah Scaramuzzo, MSN, RN, C, AOCN, an Oncology Education Specialist, was recognized for excellence in education.
