Journalist and talk show host Geraldo Rivera attended the New Jersey Medical School Convocation on May 21. Rivera was the special guest of graduating student Brenda Natal. He adopted Natal’s eighth-grade class in East Harlem and offered to pay for their college educations. He provided an educational grant for Natal's undergraduate, nursing school and medical school education. Upon Natal's graduation, Rivera promised to attend the ceremony.

UMDNJ Graduates Largest Class in University History  

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey graduated the largest class in the University's history during the 37th Annual Commencement Ceremony at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel on May 22.

Dr. Atul Gawande, a surgeon and noted author of Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science, delivered the keynote address to 1,479 graduating health professionals along with their families and friends. He told the graduates that medicine is a profession of responsibility and urged them to strive for excellence. "Our task is the betterment of as many lives as possible," Dr. Gawande said.

 

U.S. Military's Newest Officers Take Oath of Office at UMDNJ  

Witnessed by family members and friends and accompanied by a military honor guard, eight graduating physicians from the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine swore to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies" during a Supersede Commissioning ceremony on May 21on the Stratford campus. The ceremony marked the official promotion of the physicians to the rank of officers in recognition of their completion of medical school. U.S. Navy Commander (ret.) Robert Prodoehl, Director of Operations at the medical school, officiated at the ceremony.

 

CINJ Foundation Selects New Officers  

The Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation (CINJF) has selected its slate of officers for Fiscal Year 2008, which begins
July 1. CINJF, a non-profit organization, raises funds to support New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, an elite distinction held by only 38 other cancer centers in the country.

Leslie Logan Taylor, Managing Partner, Matrix Development Group, was selected again to serve as chairperson. Former CINJ Director William N. Hait, M.D., Ph.D., will serve as President of the Board. Hait is the Senior Vice President and Head of Worldwide Hematology/Oncology Research and Development at Johnson & Johnson. He also is the current President of the American Association for Cancer Research.
