Overview
The official UMDNJ logo is the shield, the initials, and the University name spelled out. The core element of the logo is a printed shield composed of three areas representing the main missions of the University: a book for education, a flask for research, and a stylized caduceus for clinical care.

The circle brandmark is a variation for use as an emblem primarily on items other than stationery. It is also designed as a brandmark on printed materials and advertising where it is not the primary logo. The circle brandmark is not a substitute for the official logo and cannot be used interchangeably. However, it may be approved for use as an element in distinct logos for University entities such as institutes and centers.

In order to maintain consistent brand identity across a wide variety of applications, it is essential to observe the guidelines and specifications contained in this guide. All UMDNJ-related marketing materials, either print or electronic, must carry either the appropriate logo or the circle brandmark according to the appropriate size specifications outlined in these guidelines.
The logos are black and red and have black and white versions as well as all white versions for printing on dark backgrounds. Any changes to the logo or rearrangement of its elements or any color changes other than those indicated will be considered non-conforming and inappropriate.
The UMDNJ identity program recognizes the complexity of the University and anticipates the need to resolve individual logo usage issues as they arise. All requests for resolution of such issues shall be directed to the Department of University Affairs, 973 972-3474.
The logos and brandmarks are available at this web site where e lectronic files may be downloaded and the logo and brandmark may be printed in camera-ready format.

FAQ
If you need assistance with any of the questions below, please email quinnaj@umdnj.edu.
- I am using the logo for a Power Point presentation for my department.
Which format (.eps or .gif) should I use?
If you are using Power Point to make presentations, there are a number of variables to consider. .Gif versions will work well if the background of the presentation is white. If the background of the slide is another color the logo will appear within a white box. Size should also be considered. If you attempt to resize the .gif formatted logo in Power Point, resolution and clarity will be lost because the .gif format is not designed for scaling. The .eps version could be brought into Power Point without a background, but the edges of the type will not be clear.
The background and size of the logo can only be properly edited with specialized graphics software such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.
Note that if you are going to be imaging slides or making prints, you could use the .eps version of the logo. On your screen, you will see a low resolution preview for positioning only. When the file is printed it will look fine.
- When I print out the logo on the printer, it appears to be a little fuzzy on my paper. Why?
There can be many reasons. The .eps version of the logo is recommended for MS Word or Corel WordPerfect documents. The .tiff version that is available on the site can generate reasonable results, but the clarity will vary depending on the size of the logo within the document and the capability of your printer. The .eps version will always generate a sharp, clear picture if you print to a PostScript printer. If the printer is not PostScript, the logo will print fuzzy.
- I am working with an outside vendor that will be printing the logo onto coffee mugs and lapel pins. They are requesting that I email the logo to them. What should I do?
In most instances, you should send them the .eps version of the logo as an email attachment. You could also refer the vendor to this site.
- I need to resize the logo for invitations that I am making for my department. Why is it too small?
The file you should choose is the .eps version of the logo. The .eps is vector based and can be resized without degrading the image quality. When you import the logo into the program that you are using to make your invitation it will be surrounded by a "bounding box". Click on a corner of that box and drag to make the logo larger or smaller. Remember to hold down the "shift" key while dragging to constrain the proportions of the image.
- I am importing the logo onto a webpage, which version should I use?
The .gif version of the logo should be used for web sites. One of the .gif versions will work well if the background of the web site is white. If the background of the slide is another color the logo will appear with white fuzzy edges or within a white box. Size should also be considered. If you attempt to resize the .gif formatted logo, resolution and clarity will be lost because the .gif format is not designed for scaling.
The background and size of the logo can only be properly edited with specialized graphics software such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.
- I have seen another UMDNJ logo used. What is it?
This is the University Brandmark.
- I work for one of the 8 schools at UMDNJ. Which logo should I use?

- Where can I get a camera-ready copy of the logo?
