About one-third of all American adults are engaged in some sort of weight-loss effort and the vast majority will eventually fail in their attempts to keep the weight off. For some, that failure may be disheartening and frustrating; for others, it can be life-threatening. Persons classified as being severely obese are at risk for a wide array of serious medical problems that can lead to premature and preventable death. Obesity is a medical condition and should be treated as such.

Are you just overweight or are you obese? In the past, a person who was at least 100 pounds heavier than their ideal weight was considered to be obese. However, in recent years, the Body Mass Index (BMI) has emerged as a better indicator. A person who has a BM I of 27+ falls within the obesity parameters. Those persons classified as severely obese may want to consider the gastric bypass surgery as a treatment option to reduce the risk of associated medical problems.

If you would like to use our BMI computer to find your BMI, you will need to calculate your height in inches (for example: 4 feet = 48 inches; 4 feet 2 inches = 50 inches; 5 feet = 60 inches; 5 feet 2 inches = 62 inches; 6 feet = 72 inches, etc...) and know your weight in pounds.

Here are some guidelines to help you understand your BMI:

Normal range - BMI 20-25
Overweight - BMI > 25
Mild Obesity - BMI 27-30
Moderate Obesity - BMI >30-35
Morbid obesity - BMI >35-50

If you enter your height in inches, it needs to be completely in inches. If your height is 5 feet 8 inches, for example, enter 68, not 58.
