Stroke is the third leading cause of death, making it critical that UH spread the word about its impact in the community. As such, staff members Denise Cark Bell (Stroke Education Center), Pansy Harris -Lane, APN (Stroke Center), Shirley Rivera (UMDCare), Carl Chase (Urban and Community Development), Yvonne Campbell (G-Blue) and Taki Zadi (Emergency Department) were on hand to teach about stroke at this health fair.

5/10 -- Free Mammography Screenings at UMDCare
With breast cancer continuing to claim thousands of lives each year, these free mammography screeings are critical. The SAVE Program, The University Hospital and UMDCare made them possible. Thanks, everyone!

5/12 -- United Muslim Inc. Health Fair
Zelia DeSouza, Ilsa Curtis and Yvonne Hogans were on hand at this event and provided blood pressure and diabetes screenings, as well as breast health information.

5/15 -- Community Health Forum
What a great way to get the community involved in their health--a community health forum! During the event, which was sponsored by NJCRI and Project PICH, guests received free health screenings and had an opportunity to have their community concerns heard.
Heather M. Jordan, MPH, CHES, Program Development Specialist and Clinic Coordinator, Tobacco Dependence Clinic - Newark attended. She recruited six people for the program.
5/19 -- Masjid Al Haqq Health Fair
Shirley Rivera of UMDCare and Yvonne Hogans of Nursing represented UH at this health fair. They conducted blood pressure and diabetes screenings.

5/20 -- Weequahic Park Association 9th Annual 5k Run
Nearly 100 people participated in this walk which is sponsored by the Weequahic Park Association. Staff members from EMS attended to ensure that on-site, medical assistance was present.
5/22 -- Free Stroke Screenings at The University Hospital
The University Hospital was proud to host free stroke screenings during StrokeAlert! 2007. This annual program, which is held as part of the American Stroke Association's designation of May as American Stroke Month, is designed to bring awareness to American's third leading cause of death--stroke.
The staff members who helped make the day a success were: Janice Brown and Denise Clark-Bell of the Emergency Department Stroke Education Center; and Pansy Harris-Lane, Jean Zhang, Molly Jacob, Muhammad Faisal, Patty Ambresio and Amy Lallier of the Department of Neurology/Stroke Service. Thanks everyone!

5/23 -- City of Newark Housing Authority Health Fair
Staff members enjoyed this health fair which was held in the spacious community room of West Kinney Gardens. Tremendous thanks to the following staff members who were on hand to help make the event successful: Janice Brown of the Emergency Department Stroke Education Center, Pat Hardy of the FXB Center and Fernando Morris, Marienela Moreno and Persephine Weeks of DAYAM.

5/25 -- Dr. E. Alma Flagg School Health Fair
The goal of this health fair was to increase awareness and provide resources for the children and families of the Dr. E. Alma Flagg School. Our contribution consisted of eye screenings that were provided by Doctors Ben Szirth and Khadijah Shahid of the NJMS Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science.

5/25 -- Belmont Runyon School Health Fair
While Doctors Szirth and Shahid were at the Dr. E. Alma Flagg School Health fair, Pat Hardy of the FXB Center made sure we were represented at the Belmont Runyon School Health Fair. Thanks Pat.
5/30 -- Communities in Schools Barbecue and Health Fair at 13th Avenue School
Communities in Schools is geared towards bringing community resources to schools. As part of the Communities in Schools program at 13th Avenue School, a health fair and barbecue were held for its students. The COC had a strong presence as the following staff members attended the event: Simone Johnson and Nadine Jenkins of the Cancer Registry; Kafilat Jimba and Tracey Richardson of the Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities; Donna Littles of the Dental Clinic; and Tanica Rodgers, Shyvirah O'Neal and Termerra Flournoy, all of the POWER Program.
