3/7 -- United States Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Annual Health Fair
This year marked our fourth consecutive year at the DEA Annual Health Fair. As with previous years, the event was very successful, and we provided a variety of services. The following individuals helped make the day successful: Atiyah Brooks, Infectious Disease Practice; Joan Odom, UMDCare; Barbara Ortiz, Dr. Ben Szirth and Dr. Khadijah Shahid of the NJMS Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science; Royston Irving of Pharmacy; Janice Brown of the Stroke Education Center; Dr. Luke Jeffries, Podiatry Services; and Patricia Hardy of the FXB Center.

3/9 -- Health Information Day at Pathmark
We continue to do our monthly community outreach at the Bergen Street Pathmark. This month featured ways that shoppers could make better food choices as Terry Jonas staffed a table on eating a balanced diet.

3/20--Newark Public Schools Employee Health Fair
The Newark Public Schools is committed to helping their employees stay healthy. As such, they host benefits and health fairs for employees each year.
To express our commitment, Zelia DeSouza of the Screening Access of Value to Essex (SAVE) Program attended and educated women about breast health and mammograms.

3/28--New Jersey Medical School Mini Med School Health Fair
This annual program that gives the public a look at medical school life continues to be a hit. The Community Outreach Committee (COC), as well as New Jersey Medical School students, was on hand for this week's session and provided screenings and information tables.
The team that made our participation possible consisted of Zelia DeSouza of the SAVE Program, Janice Brown of the Stroke Education Center, Punam Parikh and Flavia de la Cruz of the Essex County Cancer Coalition, Esther Aligmayo, nurse manager for SICU and Dr. Alissa Hersh of Asthma and Immunology,
The follow medical students assisted as well: Ekta Sha, Geethan Sivananthan, Amit Kalia, Kristen Reineke, Melanie Kaufer, Jason Zucker, Lee Flowers and Aaron Rockoff.

3/29--New Jersey Transit Health Fair
The COC was pleased to participate in New Jersey Transit's Employee Health Fair. During the fair, Amanda Fleissnner taught employees about occupational therapy while Barbara Quinones and Lissette Cespedes informed employees about a colorectal study.

3/31--Bursting Out of Our Seams: Confronting the Challenge of Obesity in Our Communities
Congressman Donald M. Payne (10th District, New Jersey), the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust and the UMDNJ Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities hosted this conference on obesity. The purpose of the conference was to highlight the prominence of obesity in our communities and how it contributes to a number of health problems.
During the conference, Yvonne Hogans, RN of nursing, Ilsa Curtis of UMDCare and Dr. Laura Hargro of University Center for Family Medicine conducted blood pressure and glucose screenings for the conference's guests. The highlight of their day, however, was meeting Mr. Charles Nolley, a member of the prestigious Tuskegee Airmen.
