1/6 -- Israel Memorial AME Church Health Fair
Although the calendar said January, the weather on this particular Saturday felt more like a spring day. With temperatures approaching the 70s, it was the perfect Saturday morning to attend a health fair.
The staff members who represented us and represented us well at this event were Julio Colon of Orthopaedics, Joan Odom, RN of UMDCare and Pat Hardy of the FXB Center. Thanks everyone!

During the Israel Memorial Church health fair, Pat Hardy, a health educator for the FXB Center, staffed a table about HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Joan Odom of UMDCare explains ways to maintain a healthy blood pressure level.
Screening statistics:
BP--21
Blucose--17
1/12 -- Health Information Day at Pathmark
Our monthly outing at Pathmark proved to be another success as Community Health Workers Guillermina Morales and Anny Robles
(both of the Division of Academic Medicine, Geriatrics, and Community Programs, New Jersey Medical School)
recruited participants for a cancer study. In addition, Sandra Sanchez educated shoppers about the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program. Great work, ladies.

1/25 -- Essex County Project Homeless Connect Day
The venue for the Essex County Project Homeless Connect Day may have been a local roller rink, but for an entire day, it served as a one-stop center for health and social services. As part of a state-wide effort, the Essex County Project Homeless Connect Day was held to assist the homeless in locating social and health services. The day also served as an opportunity to count the number of individuals living on the street, in emergency shelters and transitional housing units.
As part of the effort, which was sponsored by the NJ Alliance for the Homeless, Monarch Housing Associates, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), homeless attendees at the event received food, health screenings, clothing, haircuts, legal advice and information on several housing and public benefits.
The staff members who attended were very well received. They were: Janice Brown and Denise Clark-Bell of the Stroke Education Center; Dr. Ben Szirth and Barbara Ortiz of the NJMS Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science; Persephine Weeks, Fernando Morris and Khalil Rashidi of DAYAM; and Pat Hardy of the FXB Center. Thanks, everyone!

Dr. Ben Szirth of the NJMS Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science conducts eye disease screenings at the Essex County Project Homeless Connect Day. While conducting
the screenings, Dr. Szirth identified a person losing their vision. Fortunately, he
convinced the individual to come to the Institute for follow-up care.
Screening statistics:
Eye disease screenings: 67
Blood pressure: 20
HIV/AIDS: 8
Syphilis: 8
1/30 -- Nutrition Lecture on "Food Labels" at Bethany Senior Center
There were nothing but praises (and GREAT questions) for Lisa Goode as she spoke to guests at the Bethany Senior Center Program. Goode, a nutritionist for The University Hospital, gave a talk on "Food Labels" to the 23 seniors who attended the program.
"They asked a lot of good questions," she said.
Before Ms. Goode left, they couldn't help but ask this lively speaker one final question: "Will you come back?"
(She said yes, of course!)

Lisa Goode teaches Bethany Senior Center participants how to properly read food labels.
