5/5 -- The University Hospital Emergency Department Stroke Education Center Free Stroke Screening
Within the next 45 seconds, someone in the United States will have a stroke. Within the next three minutes, someone will die from one.

Statistics such as these prove that stroke, the third leading cause of death in the country, is a serious health issue. As such, The University Hospital hosted a free Stroke Screening Day in the hospital lobby.

During the screening, guests received a free stroke risk assessment consisting of blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol screenings, as well as a transcranial doppler screening which measured blood flow to the brain. Using this information, stroke doctors and nurses at the screening assessed each person's risk for having a stroke. The Stroke Screening Day was sponsored by The University Hospital Emergency Department Stroke Education Center and the hospital's Stroke Team.

The following staff members from the Department of Neurosurgery helped make the stroke screening day a success: Haitham Hussein, MD, Research Associate III; Adnan Qureshi, MD, Director; Jingying Zhou, MS, Research Associate; Mohammad Ibrahim, MD, Fellow; Molly Jacob, APN; Pansy Harris-Lane, APN; Phygenia Nimoh, APN, MSN; Habibullah Ghanavati, MD, Resident; and Mygenia Nimoh, APN, MSN.

They weren't alone in their efforts, however. The other staff members who assisted were Tamara Coley, MPH; Edgar Ordonez, a NJMS student; Yu-Feng Chan, MD, Director, The University Hospital Emergency Department Stroke Education Center; Rosalina Manongdo, Patient Care Coordinator; and Phoebe Aliparo, RN, Clinical Care Coordinator.
