3/11 -- Masjid Al Haqq Health Fair
As part of our on going health initiative with the Muslim community, The University Hospital hosted a health fair at Masjid Al Haqq. During the event, Matina Ismail educated guests about breastfeeding while Julio Colon took blood pressures and Ilsa Curtis did glucose screenings. In addition, Pamela Tilley distributed information about Charity Care.

3/15 -- Office on Aging/NJMS/The University Hospital Senior Health Initiative Ironbound Senior Center
The Newark Office on Aging/New Jersey Medical School/The University Hospital Senior Health Initiative continued to move forward with a stop in the Ironbound at Ironbound Senior Center.

New Jersey Family Practice staff members Rosa Garcia, a senior certified medical assistant and Nickina Johnson, a certified medical assistant, provided the screenings. Edgar Ordonez, a third year NJMS student, assisted them.

3/17 -- Emergency Department Stroke Education Center "Stroke Awareness Day"
As part of its new Stroke Education Center, the Emergency Department hosted their second “Stroke Awareness Day” to educate the public about the signs, symptoms and treatments for stroke. This Center, which is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, is directed by
Dr. Yu-Feng Chan. The purpose of the center is to educate the more than 100,000 patients and visitors who visit the hospital’s Emergency Department every year by providing them with information on stroke and other health-related issues.

3/18-- Free Kidney Disease Screening at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church
New Jersey Medical School, Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, hosted a kidney disease screening at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. The screening, which was free for all participants, was especially crucial for those with hypertension and/or diabetes--two risk factors for the disease.

3/18-- Diabetes and Nutrition Seminar at Welcome Baptist Church
All were "welcome" at the diabetes and nutrition seminar at Welcome Baptist Church. A total of 26 people attended and heard from an expert in diabetes management--Langirene Aguilh, APN, CDE of UMDCare. In addition, Judy Benn, RD, Women, Infants and Children (WIC), discussed nutrition, healthy food choices and the importance of the WIC Program while Vera McClendon, RN, Children's Health Center (D-Yellow), presented information on childhood diseases and the importance of age appropriate immunizations. Leading by example, Valeria Jacobs-Andrews, director for the WIC Program, discussed the WIC/Seniors' Farmers' Market Program.

3/22--Office on Aging/NJMS/The University Hospital Senior Health Initiative Follow-Up Visit at South Ward Senior Center
The Office on Aging/NJMS/The University Hospital Senior Health Initiative took its efforts to the South Ward with a follow-up visit to the South Ward Senior Center.

3/27--Baptist Ministers Conference of Newark and Vicinity
The University Hospital, The University Hospital Department of Pastoral Care and Education and the Baptist Ministers Conference of Newark and Vicinity hosted a Pastors' Health Retreat in the Rosemary Gellene Room on the Newark campus. Several pastors, led by our own Rev. Dr. George Blackwell, Director, Department of Pastoral Care and Education, as well as ministers and layman, attended the retreat which featured talks on prostate cancer, hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, colorectal cancer, diabetic retinopathy, oral health and drug interactions. The retreat also included stress tests as well as screenings for hypertension and diabetes.

3/29--Essex County College (ECC) Health Fair
The University Hospital was proud to have a strong presence at the Essex County College Health fair. The event was geared towards ECC employees. Maria Barros, RN, BSN, Heidi Hodgson, RN, Dr. Sailaga Nootheti and Carl Chase attended on our behalf.

3/29--Mini Med School Health Fair
A variety of men, women and young adults got a glimpse of the medical school experience as part of the New Jersey Medical School Mini Med School Program. The program, which runs weekly over a 10 week period, features lectures from a variety of NJMS/UH physicians and other personnel.

As part of our community outreach efforts, The University Hospital sponsored a health fair at one of the sessions. Many thanks to the following staff members who made our participation possible: Cheri Berger, Admitting Manager, Denise Johnson, (Nursing), Luz Rivera (WIC), Punam Parikh (Essex County Cancer Coalition) and Avani Malankar (Physical Therapy).
