2/8--National HIV/AIDS African-American Awareness Day
HIV/AIDS continues to plague our communities, and the disease is spreading fasting among minorities. As such, the NJMS Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine (DAYAM) hosted this event to highlight the disease's impact among African Americans. The program featured guest speakers and organizations that provide HIV/AIDS related social services.
Nearly 100 people attended.

2/10--The University Hospital presents "It's A Triple Celebration: Valentine's Day, Heart Month and Black History Month"--Free Health Screening Day at Pathmark
The University Hospital partnered with Pathmark to offer on-site blood pressure screening for customers. This screening was held to recognize Black History Month as well as Valentine's Day and National Heart Month (the American Heart Association's initiative to promote cardiovascular wellness.)
Maria Barros, RN screened 19 people and distributed health information tips as well.

2/22--"Superheroes to the Rescue"--DYFS Foster Parent Recruitment Program
The University Hospital proudly hosted “Superheroes to the Rescue,” an informational program for potential foster parents for the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) Foster Parent Recruitment Program. The goal of the program was to educate those interested in becoming foster parents to a special needs child, specifically those who are medically fragile. The event, which was covered by News 12 New Jersey, attracted 23 guests.

2/24--UMDNJ Board of Concerned Citizens and The University Hospital Black History Month/Student Health Awareness Day
The hospital and the Board of Concerned Citizens sponsored a Youth Health Awareness Day for middle/high students from Newton Street School and The Academy of Vocational Careers.
The program featured Dr. Jeff Levine, an assistant professor at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and contestant on the second season of NBC-TV’s "The Biggest Loser." This program also highlighted Dr. Juan Asensio, a trauma surgeon at UH featured on the Discovery Health Channel's "Medical Maverick.” Dr. Levine discussed weight management while Dr. Asensio discussed the link between gang life and life-threatening injuries.
During the program, Tiffany L. Smith, Community Marketing Coordinator, also showed the students, “Introducing Ghana,” a mini-documentary of her two-week trip to Ghana, West Africa.
2/26--New Ambulatory Care Center Presentation at Masjid Al Haqq
Victor Hernandez, Vice President, Ambulatory Care Services and Community Programs at The University Hospital, was the guest speaker at Masjid Al Haqq. This masjid is part of the hospital's Muslim community outreach health initiative with the Council of Imans in New Jersey, Majlis Ash-Shura of New Jersey and the National Islamic Association. During the presentation, Mr. Hernandez discussed the New Ambulatory Care Center and its services. In addition, he also promoted the upcoming 3/11 health fair. A total of 24 people attended.

2/28--Office on Aging/NJMS/UH Senior Health Initiative Follow-up visit at Bethany Senior Center
The Newark Office on Aging/New Jersey Medical School/The University Hospital Senior Health Initiative continues to move forward. As part of the initiative, students from New Jersey Medical School, including Edgardo Ordonez, made a follow-up visit to seniors at Bethany Baptist Church. Nearly 25 guests received hypertension and diabetes screenings.
