4/7 - New Jersey Transit Health Fair
The University Hospital had the largest presence at the New Jersey Transit Health Fair in Newark. During the event, we were represented by Regine Cheek from the New Born Nursery; Amanda Fleissner, Lauren Mavos and Margarita Del Valle of Occupational Therapy; Terry Jonas and Aline Jean-Marie of Food and Nutrition; and Saundra Foster of OB/GYN Associates.

4/8 -- Rutgers University/Inner Circle Referral "Women's Health Conference"
Rutgers University collaborated with Inner Circle Referral to host a Women's Health Conference. And who represented us at the event? Women, of course: Dr. Laura Hargro of the Department of Family Medicine and Ilsa Curtis of UMDCare. Thanks ladies!

4/8 -- Asthma and Allergy Presentation at Gethsemane Baptist Church
A total of 23 people increased their understanding of asthma and allergies thanks to our presentation at Gethsemane Baptist Church. The presentation was sponsored by the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program.
During the event, Annette Bugg, APN from the Pediatric Asthma Center delivered the clinical presentation and Wamaitha Mirie, Nutritionist, WIC Program, discussed food allergies, healthy food choices and the benefits of the WIC program. Valeria Jacos-Andrews discussed the importance of the Farmers' Market Program and the need for age appropriate pediatric immunizations.
4/8 -- Hero's Aren't Born. They're Trained"-- FREE Family and Friends CPR Training
The theme of our annual Free Family and Friends CPR Training Day was "Heroes Aren't Born. They're Trained." The event was sponsored by The University Hospital's Community Training Center. A total of 45 people received training on the fundamentals of CPR.
4/8-- Culture, Care and Comfort: African-Americans and Care at the End of Life
The hospital was a co-sponsor of "Culture, Care and Comfort: African-Americans and Care at the End of Life." Nearly 75 people attended the event which covered disparities in pain management and other forms of palliative care, specifically among African-Americans. The half-day seminar explored issues related to spirituality, culture, belief systems and potential biases.
4/9-- The University Hospital Auxiliary/The University Hospital "Hats on Parade" and Exotic Tea Reception
The University Hospital Auxiliary and The University Hospital co-sponsored the “Hats on Parade” and Exotic Tea Reception to benefit The University Hospital Cancer Center Healing Garden. A total of 75 guests attended and were impressed by the one-of-a-kind creations of “Tonia,” a local milliner.
4/20 -- "The Mocha Manual: A Guide to a Fabulous Pregnancy" Lecture
The Friends’ Health Connection and The University Hospital co-sponsored a discussion with Essence Magazine’s Finance and Careers Editor Kimberly Seals-Allers who discussed her book, “The Mocha Manual to a Fabulous Pregnancy.”
A total of 17 women attended the on-campus lecture which focused on the unique issues African-American women face during pregnancy.
In addition to hearing remarks by Seals-Allers, guests were addressed by
Dr. Andrea Price-Rutty, the OB/GYN who wrote the book's forward.

4/21 -- Pathmark Monthly Health Screening
Although most shoppers thought they'd only be getting groceries from the Bergen Street Pathmark, they received a nice surprise upon arriving: free blood pressure screenings courtesy of The University Hospital. The screenings, which were conducted by Maria Barros, RN, were held as as part of our monthly health screenings at Pathmark.

4/26--Chancellor Avenue School Annex Health Fair
Although The University Hospital's community outreach efforts are primarily geared towards adults, we recognize the importance of educating youngsters as well. As such, Pat Hardy, FXB Center, attended the Chancellor Avenue School Health Fair. Nearly 50 people (students, parents and teachers) visited her table which featured educational material on HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
4/28--Lincoln School Health Fair
The University Family Practice Center at Vailsburg represented us well at the annual Lincoln School Health Fair. During the event, staff members from the practice conducted health screeinings for the fair's guests.
4/29--Newark Infant Immunization Day Health Fair
"Love Them. Protect Them. Immunize Them." That was the message for National Infant Immunization Week. The week-long event featured free immunizations, games, activities and community resources. The University Hospital participated in the event's health fair and performed blood pressure screenings.
