11/14--The University Hospital Employee Lecture Series Presents: Keeping Diabetic Feet on the Right Path--What Diabetics Should Know about Foot Health"
November was Diabetes Awareness Month--the perfect time to learn more about diabetes and foot health. As such, 32 employees joined Dr. George Wallace, head of the Podiatry Services Department at The University Hospital, as he discussed key ways that diabetics can take proper care of their feet.
11/17--United States District Court Health Fair
Employees of the United States District Court in Newark received eye disease screenings at their annual health fair thanks to Dr. Khadijah Shahid, Dr. Ben Szirth and Barbara Ortiz of the NJMS Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science. As part of the Institute's commitment to community outreach excellence, 30 district court employees were screened for diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes and age-related macular degeneration.
During the health fair, a delegation from Japan (Takeshi Kitamura, Koji Uchida and Koji Kobashi) joined Dr. Szirth and his team to learn how they conduct eye screenings in the community. Two members of the delegation (Takeshi Kitamura and Koji Uchida) are actually the engineers who designed the Canon CR-DGi retinal camera and TX-F tonometer that Dr. Szirth uses during the screenings.
Staff members from the University Center for Family Medicine (Vida Franco, Holly Springs, Christine Davis and Veronica Subol) also attended the health fair and conducted blood pressure and diabetes screenings. In addition, Pat Hardy from the FXB Center distributed information about HIV and AIDS.

11/27--Newark Police Clergy Alliance and Officers Meeting
Not only did the police officers and clergy at this meeting keep UMDCare's Demus Paye busy doing blood pressures, they also booked him for a future event. Stay tuned for details!
11/29--Washington Manor Tenant Association/City of Orange Health Fair
It was a packed affair as seniors from Washington Manor Tenant Association attended a health fair in their honor. During the event, DAYAM's health educator Khalil Sabu Rashidi taught seniors about the spread of HIV among the elderly. In addition, Veronica Stewart, a nutritionist in OB/GYN Associates, taught the seniors about good eating habits.
