6/3 -- Bloodless Surgery Seminar
The University Center for Bloodless Surgery and Medicine Community Outreach seminar, “A Comprehensive Review of Alternatives to Blood Transfusion,” drew an audience of 73 people. Guests were updated on the latest bloodless surgery options and educated on advance directives as well. Evaluations of the event were overwhelmingly positive with 97 percent of attendees stating that they would refer a loved one to UH.
Michelle Thomas, RN, coordinator for the hospital's blood Surgery Program, was the coordinator of the event.
6/3 -- Waris Cultural Center Health Fair
This health fair was held
as part of the hospital's Muslim community outreach initiative which addresses the specific health concerns of the Muslim community. The groups collaborating with UH for this effort are the Council of Imams in New Jersey, Majlis Ash-Shura and the National Islamic Association.

6/6 -- McKinley Elementary School Health Fair
The theme of this school's health fair was, "McKinley Promotes a Healthy Way of Living," and that's what our staff members did. Terry Jonas of the Food and Nutrition Department promoted healthy eating while pharmacist Royston Irving (who is a an alumnus of Mckinley) spoke about pharmacy careers.

6/9--Anheuser Busch Summer and Safety Health Fair
Although summer is a time of sun, fun and long-awaited vacations, it is not the time to take a break from safety and good health. This message was stressed at the Anheuser Busch Summer and Safety Health Fair. The staff members who helped spread this message on behalf of UH were: Maria Barros, RN, BSN, Michelle Wien, DrPH, RD, Sharon Clancy, MPH, Tamara Coley, MPH, Jacqueline Gomes, RD, and Taki Zaidi, intern. 6/10--Resurrection Outreach Ministries 2nd Annual Health Fair

Although the calendar marked June, the temperatures at this outdoor health fair felt
more like March or April. That couldn't keep Ilsa Curtis, Tiffany L. Smith and Pat Hardy from participating in the Resurrection Outreach Ministries health fair. (Vera Holmes, not pictured, participated also.)

6/10--Roberto Clemente School Health Fair: "Celebrating our Community Resources"
The Roberto Clemente Elementary School Leadership Council hosted this health fair entitled "Celebrating our Community Resources." The goal of the event was to provide parents, children and the community with a means of positively interacting and exploring the availability of beneficial resources.
UH was proud to have several staff members help the school reach its goal: Maria Barros, RN, BSN, Janice Brown, MS, III, Taki Zaidi, Research Intern and Tamara Coley, MPH.

6/15 -- Stephen Crane Elderly Health Fair
The seniors at Stephen Crane Elderly were treated to a day of health information and fun at Stephen Crane Elderly's Health Fair. Our representative, Saundra Foster, distributed information about OB/GYN and HIV/AIDS. The latter was a particularly timely topic because HIV/AIDS infections has shown significant increases among seniors.
Attendance: 100 people
6/15-- "Revitalize Through Indonesian Breathing Techniques"
The University Hospital participated in “Celebrate Male Health Month: Revitalize through Indonesian Breathing.” The program, held in recognition of Male Health Month, was co-sponsored by the Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the Young Fathers’ Program. Nearly 50 people attended.
6/24 -- Masjid As'Habul Yameen Health Fair
This health fair was held as part of the hospital's Muslim comunity outreach initiative which addresses the specific health concerns of the Muslim community. 6/27-- Bethany Senior Center Dual Presentation
Health related eye and hearing care for seniors were the topics discussed at The University Hospital sponsored presentation at Bethany Senior Center. This program made it possible for 19 seniors to be screened by Khadijah Shahid, Dr. Ben Szirth, Iheanyi Ahukanna and Barbara Ortiz from the Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science to determine whether they had glaucoma or other eye diseases.
During the same event, Dr. Patricia Connelly, director of the Audiology Service at UH, taught the seniors how certain illnesses can impact balance and hearing.

6/28-- United Neighbors Development Corporation Health Fair
The significance of screenings was highlighted during the United Neighbors Development Corp. Community Health Fair. During the event, a participant was discovered to have a serious eye problem and referred to the department of ophthalmology for treatment.
The staff members at this screening included Khadijah Shahid and Ben Szirth, PhD (telephealth operators), Iheanyi Ahukanna (ocular telehealth assistant) and Barbara Ortiz (outreach coordinator).

6/29 -- "Hypertension: Causes and Treatments" presentation at the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU)
Dr. Michael Jaker, division of academic medicine, geriatrics, and community programs, was a guest speaker at the State of New Jersey Board of Public Utilities' Lunch & Learn Health Series. Dr. Jaker spoke to nearly 50 employees on the causes and treatments for hypertension.
6/29 -- Consortium for Pre-College Education of Greater Newark Health Fair
UH was represented at the Consortium for Pre-College Education of Greater Newark by pharmacist Nermin Boles-Attia who spoke to about 20 students on pharmacy career opportunities. The event was held at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
6/30 -- Ironbound Community Corp. (ICC) Health Fair
Our outreach events in the Ironbound section of Newark are normally very well attended, and this year's health fair at Ironbound Community Corp. was no different. Participants were screened for hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol and HIV/AIDS. They also received information on nutrition and medication management.
The health fair was led by Dr. Ana Natale-Pereira (NJMS, Department of Medicine, Division of Academic Medicine, Geriatrics, and Community Programs). She was assisted by Dr. Siriade Filipe-Izaguirre (from the same division), Jacqueline Gomes (Department of Primary Care), Tricia Davidson, RD, CDE, (SHRP doctoral student), Joan Odom, RN (UMDCare), Terry Jonas, Nutritionist Assistant (Food and Nutrition), Fernando Morris, Public Health Rep. II and Marianela Moreno, Medical Health Technician (both of DAYAM) and Victor Pardo, Pharmacy Manager, (Pharmacy)
