-- Heart Attack Education Day at New Community Gardens
Located practically
across the street from the Medical Sciences Building, New Community
Gardens is one of our closest neighbors. As such, this senior housing
complex was the perfect first stop for the hospital's new health
education campaign that focuses on heart attacks.
Similar to our successful stroke education outreach campaign in
2002, the campaign will travel to senior complexes throughout the
Central Ward to educate seniors and others about heart attacks.
Leading this effort will be Merwin Richard, MD, director of the
Cardiac Catheterization Lab at the hospital. Dr. Richard spoke at
the New Community lecture and showed a video on the signs and symptoms
of a heart attack. His state-of-the-art presentation also demonstrated
how angioplasty works.
Raghu Bejjanki, MD, Fellow, Cardiology and Chuck Loeber also assisted
with this lecture.

Education Day at Villa Victoria
Dr. Merwin Richard
and Chuck Loeber took the Heart Attack campaign to Villa Victoria,
a senior complex on the borderline of the Central and North Wards.
The presentation was very well received and as one senior summed
it up, "That University Hospital, they're the best."

Education Day at New Hope Baptist Church
Frigid temperatures
didn't stop the members of New Hope Baptist Church from attending
Dr. Merwin Richard's lecture on heart attacks. Despite the cold

who took blood pressures.

Lecture at Happy Days Adult Day Care Center
Dr. Paul Lama (Ophthalmology) made such a good impression among
the seniors at Happy Days Adult Day Care Center in 2002 that they
requested him back in 2003. Dr. Lama obliged and once again, his
medical expertise and warm demeanor made him a hit.
"He is such a nice person," said Germaine Berry, the Center's
Activities Director.

Healthy Thursdays at the Garden Cafe
University Hospital employees got a double treat on this particilar
day: the chance to taste a heart healthy shrimp dish and get a free
blood pressure reading.
As part of Heart Healthy Thursday's, the menu at the garden cafe
includes a dish that is low in salt and fat, and is good for the
heart. This Thursday's dish featured a tasty seafood dish called
sesame shrimp with coucous. Plus, there was one other benefit--the
dish was only $2.50.
Chuck Loeber was on hand to do the blood presure readings.
