2/6 -- Tuberculosis presentation at
St. James Academy
Khalil Rashidi of the National Tuberculosis Center helped youngsters at St. James Academy get a head start in understanding tuberculosis education. He spoke to over two dozen students at the Community Food Bank's after-school program, which is held at St. James as well as other sites around the city.

Khalil said that the students, composed of primarily fourth and fifth graders, had excellent questions.

2/6 -- National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
Hundreds of HIV/AIDS activists, educators and patients brought attention to the disease and its impact on the African-American community as part of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

The program consisted of HIV/AIDS exhibits, specifically highlighting programs, drug therapies and organizations that serve those infected and affected by the disease. Poetry and other forms of self-expression were also a part of the program. .

The event was also a prelude to the Latino HIV/AIDS Health Festival in June.

2/11-- Madison Elementary School
Although it was a bitterly cold winter morning, parents from Madison Elementary School made sure that at the health fair staffed by Darlena Anderson (Newborn Nursery), Eligia Reyes, and John Anderson (both DAYAM) was a success. As a results, the school's social worker who organized the event has requested another health fair in the future.

2/11 -- Newark Museum Health Fair
While John, Darlena and Eligia were busy at Madison Elementary, Anna Haywood (Babyland) was represented the hospital at the Newark Museum's annual health fair for their employees.

2/14 -- Smoking Cessation Day at Pathmark
If you smoke two packs of cigarettes a day, you spend over $4,000 a year in smoking. Imagine how you could be spending that money: bills, investments, new furniture--maybe even a vacation. Besides the money, you could add 13-14 years to your life, which is the average time a person cuts off from their life when they smoke.

As part of our free monthly health screening at Pathmark, these facts and others were discussed with shoppers. Smoking cessation guru John Norris, MD (UMDCare) and Glenecia Moore (Pediatric Tobacco Project, Department of Psychiatry) staffed this event.

2/14 -- Cholesterol Screening Day at University Family Practice Day at Vailsburg
With heart disease being the number one cause of death in the country, residents of Newark's West Ward were more than willing to take advantage of our free cholesterol screenings at the Vailsburg practice. Cholesterol screenings are a good way to determine heart healthiness and these screenings were just in time for Valentine's Day--the perfect day to make sure your heart was healthy for your sweetheart.

Vailsburg physician Robyn Gantt, MD led this screening effort which was co-sponsored by Pfizer Corp.
