8/1 Newark Public Schools Office on Adult Education 8th Annual Health Fair
Since its inception, this health fair was designed to provide adult education students and their families with much-needed health services and information. UH was proud to be on board with this project as staff members Denise Clark-Bell and Kenneth Page (SAVE Program) and Saundra Foster (OB/GYN Associates) served as our attendees. New Jersey Medical School student Torian Easterling also took time from his busy schedule to attend. Thanks, everyone!

During the Office of Adult Education health fair, Denise Clark Bell and Kenneth Page (SAVE Program) and Saundra Foster (OB/GYN Associates) gave adult education students information on prostate cancer, and men and women's health.

8/4 -- City of Orange Cultural Festival
This event celebrated the diversity of the Orange community. In addition, our staff members, Ilsa Curtis (a medical technician in UMDCare) and Julio Colon (an orthopaedic technician from Orthopaedics) were on hand to conduct health screenings.

8/4 -- Anheuser-Busch "Back to School" Safety Event
As children prepared to return back to school, this event gave parents helpful information on helping their children get the best out of the school year. During the program, Michelle Wien, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Primary Care, and Jacqueline Gomes, RD, Clinical Instructor, (both from SHRP) were on hand to teach parents about good nutrition, wise cafeteria food choices and overall food safety.

Dr. Wien and Ms. Wien provided glucose screenings as well. Thanks, ladies!

8/12 -- Worship Without Walls Kingdom Fest -- Gospel Crusade
With beautiful Weequahic Park as the backdrop, this worship event/gospel crusade featured singing, praise dancing and spoken word. In addition, various agencies had information booths and The University Hospital provided health screenings. UMDCare staff members Ilsa Curtis and John Rafols did the actual screenings and Pat Hardy from the FXB Center distributed information on HIV/AIDS.

8/19 -- 1st Annual Friends and Family Fitness Event/Kids Fitness Day
Since it's never too early to teach young people about good health, this event focused on fitness for kids. To support this effort, The University Hospital provided blood pressure screenings for the parents of the children. Ilsa Curtis of UMDCare provided these screenings.

8/24--Housing Authority of Newark, Department of Family Services/Family Self-Sufficiency Health Fair 2006 (Baxter Elderly and Family; Foushee Towers; James C. White Manor)
Combine great weather, outstanding health information and helpful community resources and you'll have the components for an outstanding health fair. Such was the Newark Housing Authority's combined health fair for three of its sites--Baxter Elderly and Family, Foushee Towers and James C. White Manor.

During the event, DAYAM staff members Khalil Rashidi and Fernando Morris provided HIV/AIDS education and testing while Saundra Foster distributed information on HIV/AIDS and women's health issues.

8/26-- City of Newark/Office of the Mayor Safe Summer Initiative at
J.P. Bradley Court

The "Safe Summer Initiative" was designed to reduce violent crime in Newark, particularly homicides during the summer, by providing safe activities for youth throughout the city. As part of this initiative, The University Hospital participated in the Initiative's health fair at the Newark Housing Authority/J.P. Bradley Court Housing Development. UMDCare Medical Technician Ilsa Curtis was on hand to provide glucose screenings.

8/31 -- Newark Housing Authority/J.P. Bradley Court Annual Health Fair
J.P. Bradley Court ushered out summer with a health fair for its residents. During the event, Judy Galicia, RN of Patient Care Services conducted blood pressure screenings.
